The Current Contract Thread - Who Needs to Be Restructured (1 Viewer)

Hills contract almost forces the saints to draft or sign a top free agent QB.

Hill set the min $ for anyone to come here. If Winston is back, he's wanting more $ than hill. That's the downside.

Hill doing the joker role next year going into preseason would help the offense more.
It’s a very Byron Jones Xavier Howard situation.

Malcolm Jenkins isn't even worth a roster spot at his age, much less actually paying him money to play.

He's also the same "captain" that didn't even acknowledge Taysom walking off the field after his first TD Pass the other night (before all the INTs). Guy is a straight douche that is also washed up and can't play anymore.

Who cares about him acknowledging Taysom. Hill isn’t a god. Get outta here with that crap. If Payton and company sees Jenkins’ leadership as worth it, I won’t complain.

Honestly, one player who's production hasn't matched his contract and is in line for an outright paycut is Cam Jordan.

He just isn't the same force we've seen in years past where he was still wreaking havoc in the pocket, even while being double teamed.

2018 (16 games)
  • 883 snaps
  • 43 pressures (12 sacks, 24 hurries, 7 QB hits)
  • 4.87% pressure rate
2019 (16 games)
  • 876 snaps
  • 49 pressures (15.5 sacks, 27 hurries, 6 QB hits)
  • 5.59% pressure rate
Now he's routinely being stymied in 1v1 match ups, even against average RT's. We saw a preview of it last year...

2020 (16 games)
  • 816 snaps
  • 26 pressures (7.5 sacks, 9 hurries, 8 QB hits)
  • 3.19% pressure rate
...and this year seems to be the lackluster sequel.

2021 (through 12 games)
  • 639 snaps
  • 21 pressures (4 sacks, 7 hurries, 10 QB hits)
  • 3.28% pressure rate
  • on pace for 905.25 snaps and 29.75 pressures (5.67 sacks, 9.92 hurries, 14.17 QB hits) in 17 games
One saving grace last year was he was still posting solid run stuffing abilities collecting 11 TFL's (1.35% TFL rate), but even that has declined this year with 6 currently and a 0.94% TFL rate (on pace for 8.5 TFL).

Now I love Cam Jordan the player, the myth, the legend, but unfortunately his production just isn't meeting the expectations of his contract numbers and that $22.88M cap hit for next year.

I agree 100 % and it's why he was the first contract that stood out to me. We simply cannot pay him the scheduled $23 million at his current level of play, we would be crippling our ability to sign much needed talent and depth on the roster

I'm at the Point of don't extend or restructure, take the cap hit, stop kicking the can and rebuild. But, I know that's not how it works. At least don't restructure cam Jordan, no need to push that money further out.

At this point,I think they should just run with book next season with his cheap price tag and rebuild around him.
They have no choice but to restructure quite a few players just to get under the cap to start the league year and sign enough players to make a roster for the off season.

There are a lot of contracts that’ll need to go before March 16th. Jenkins and Roby for sure, but that is losing two DBs when we have two other that are free agents in Marcus and PJ Williams. That basically guts the secondary. Cam Jordans will leave us with minimal cap savings and tons of dead money if we move on from him, and hurt us down the road if we restructure. Nobody is trading for that contract. But can you count on Davenport and Turner to stay healthy next year? Ramczyk and Lattimore are pretty simple restructures to get cap space, but will also leave the team with bigger backloaded contracts that’ll have to get paid for eventually.

It’s going to be a rough offseason.
Yes the addition of Roby cost us a 3rd rounder and a conditional pick as well in 2022, the conditional pick turned out to be a 6th rounder. We were hurting at CB at the time but what we gave up is debatable, and most fans say was too much. The Texans paid $7 million of Roby's salary for 2021, leaving the Saints paying only $1.8 for the season. Problem next year is he will hit our cap for $10 million if retained under the current agreement. Good news is we can wash our hands with zero dead money, bad news is the lost picks but that's water under the bridge

The context of the trade has to be factored in. When the trade was completed our star CB was facing a potential suspension at some point and our other CB was a rookie.

That's why I said we we hurting at CB at the time, all good lol. I am just looking at what we can do to improve the team going forward

I'd like to keep Roby as he's stepped up when others haven't played well and vice versa as he hasn't been perfect. Maybe an extension to get that cap hit reduced or something.

Yes I fully agree. We can't do the 10 million for next season. And as another poster pointed out we have Marcus Williams entering FA and PJ Williams, and we may part ways with Jenkins. There will be some holes to fill and we may need Roby, just at a different salary

I don’t see it happening. He is the clearest path to cutting$10 million in cap without any additional consequences. While he has been playing more, I think he’s been pretty inconsistent. Some good plays, but some really not good plays as well.

So pretty much like Latt and Adebo.

Point of this thread is to examine some current players on our roster who you believe their contract should be restructured to free up valuable cap space. We have some posters on the site who are really informed and their input is more than welcomed. Again, this isn't a thread to tear down anyone, it is simply one to discuss how Loomis may help the team going forward battling the cap.

I will go first with a contract that I see when examining it will be a huge hit to our salary cap in 2022

Current Contract

Cameron Jordan signed a 3 year, $52,500,000 contract with the New Orleans Saints, including a $15,500,000 signing bonus, $42,035,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $17,500,000. In 2021, Jordan will earn a base salary of $1,075,000, a restructure bonus of $12,725,000 and a workout bonus of $100,000, while carrying a cap hit of $9,356,250 and a dead cap value of $30,700,000.

What jumps out to me is the huge increase in salary and cap hit of $9,356,250 in 2021 to the $22,881,250 in 2022. In a year where we need to sign some much needed talent and depth, this may be a good one to restructure. Cam is and always been one of my favorite Saints players, again this isn't a tear down thread, simply looking at salary versus production. This may be a good place to start to free up money.

What other contracts do some of you guru's see out there that can be restructured and help us going forward?
Won't that just increase dead money in the future.

If you walked away from Cam this year without the post June 1st designation, you’d advance all of his bonus money to 2022, and only save a little over $1.2 million on the cap. If you designate him a June 1 cut, you‘d split his cap hit over two years, freeing up a bunch after June 1st. The problem is that we have to be under the cap on March 16th.
This math is too difficult for me. Thanks

I’d say Malcolm Jenkins needs to take a pay cut or be released. He’s not close to the player he once was, and he’s not worth the cap space he takes up.
He may hang them up after Ceedee Lamb damn near broke his ankles the other night. That kind of juke, let’s an older player know that this is a young man’s game.
