I know a lot of people on here have all of the sudden decided that our nation is going to hell because of the size of government and deficits. But watching telelvision last night I realized that our country is going to hell in a far more insidious way.
How many men in this country are out-of-shape fatties who cannot get it up and have trouble urinating? Talk about the decline of a nation.

A thousand years from now, if civilization is still here, they will look back on this time as an era when males were bald, fat, couldn't pee right and needed a pill to get an erection.

This isn't some sudden realization.

Anyone honest who steps back and looks at the trend of the last 50 years can't feel real good.

The difference is that the bubbles have popped and the consumption buzz is wearing off.

Some new opiate will have to be found to serve as a distraction. The obesity was just a function of the consumption.

The Consumption Function? ( a little joke for you econ majors).

the #1 contributor to the decline of the nation has been the global unfair trade movement that has moved our manufacturing base outside of the boarders of the united states. Now what has caused that is a number of issues where government, business and unions share a lot of blame.

We might even survive that if we did not couple it with chronic deficit spending, which is fueled by all the wrong headed foreign and domestic policies, and corrupt politics, regularly recounted on this board.

Hugh Hefner claims Viagra is the greatest legal drug ever invented. Who am I to disagree?

That's wrong.

It's a global probem, and it has as much to do with the industrialized food industry as anything.

It doesn't have the same, nice, pat ideological sound to it...but poor people aren't getting fatter because we consume too much.

It is a global problem and it's multifacted.

Portion size is one of the facets, and portions of the wrong things in bad combinations.

I thought this was going to be about the 'shows' that come on t.v that have people watching them.

I'm tired of hearing the conversations at work about 'the hills' or whatever other stupid show is on.

Do what I do, say outloud that you think anyone who watches those shows are complete idiots. They won't talk about them around you again.

It is a global problem and while portioin sizes are somewhat bigger, I believe the problem lies right in front of us: Internet, 5 gazillion channels on TV, Sony Playstations, XBOX, video games, etc.

They wonder why so many children are obese? It's right there in front of them. When I was growing up, my parents practically had to chain us to the house to keep us indoors. Today, most kids are indoors trying to beat Halo 25 or whatever they hell is out there. And the video gaming industry knows this hence the invention of Wii - "Get Up And Play". Playstation is next to come out with a get up and play device.

My personal belief is that the internet is going to be our downfall as a civilization. It breeds anymosity and allows people to communicate with others behind the viel of a screen. It shelters us and is closing the door on human contact.

don't forget the food the kids are eating - dramatically different from 30 or 50 years ago - both in the amount of chemicals, fats, sugars, etc as well as serving size

and don't forget the shrinking amount of activity kids are getting in school. There's just not enough time to run and play - we've got to get them ready for those standardized tests.

We know many of the reasons.... we just elect not to do anything about them widescale.
