Free police escorts for team owners, and 35,000 free parking spaces. Presidential suites at no cost in high-end hotels. Free billboards across the Twin Cities. Guarantees to receive all revenue from the game’s ticket sales — even a requirement for NFL-preferred ATMs at the stadium. and many more demands...

NFL had a long and pricey Super Bowl wish list | Star Tribune

"Minneapolis City Council President Barb Johnson said “incentives” were necessary to host the Super Bowl, but Mayor Betsy Hodges’ office said it did not know what the city’s host committee ultimately agreed to. “We haven’t seen the bid, so we don’t know what was agreed to,” said Kate Brickman, Hodges’ spokeswoman."

lol..

btw, the entire list of NFL requirements is presented in a pdf that you can download at the bottom of the article.. fascinating stuff.

They are just greedy to protect the image of the Shield, that's all.

Ya know, there is no law or rule or statue that says the NFL is going to stay viable for all time. The League could collapse under the weight of its own self-serving, self-centered operations aimed at bloating the wallets of a very select few. Will the NFL stay popular forever???

Wow. The cities get shaken down by their local owners, under threat of departure, and then get shaken down by the NFL.

The good/sad thing is that it's still probably worth it to the cities.

That stuff is mind bending what they ask for. Take one for example 35000 free parking spaces. What are parking spots worth during Super Bowl? Even if you figure out cheaply the are worth 50 a day for four days that is a free 7 million. So they bully you into building a new stadium and they make you pay for their party! Sweet!

Unfortunately this means New Orleans has probably given in to these types of demands on multiple occasions. We'll be doing it again too. That plus they will probably force the superdome into retirement if we want to keep getting superbowls. Miami already was told if they dont upgrade their stadium they wont get any more. Look a the poor Bills fans, they are being told now if they don't build a new stadium the team will leave in five years. Of course they want taxpayers to pay about 1/2 the cost of a stadium as a gift to whatever billionaire buys the team.

Hi y'all;

No real surprise. It seems like every proposal has the bribe built-in. I would offer:
Play the Super Bowl in London. A team there makes ZERO sense, logistically or physically; but 1 huge event per year is fine. The majority, of the attendees, aren't the real fans. Those hardcore fans are as likely to travel to London, as anywhere to see the game. let the NFL shake down the people of London. I watch it on TV, most do. If the Saints play in the big game, the flight to London would still be cheaper than the tix!

This shows you the real relationship between the state and local government. Tax payers are hosing local leaders about the deal but the local leaders didn't even know the details of the agreement. Makes me wonder what we had to give up to host the last SB here. Police escort for people who can afford to pay for security?, really? Free high end hotel suites? ATMs? Even if Vikingville stands to make millions in this ego feeding deal, the NFL is still going to rob the people of hundreds of millions before the ball meets toe in the game. These NFL owners get their red nose pitbull to assume the image of the NFL while they continue sharing profits in the background. They threaten their cities with relocation if they don't give them new free buildings to show off their toys in.

I bet that one day the NFL is going to charge subscription fees to watch the draft and enough people will pay to make the sensible outraged fan non existant in the eyes of the NFL.

New Orleans has plenty of tourism going on around Super Bowl. Anybody ever hear of Mardi Gras? Why in the world should we give out largely reduced hotel rooms to these rich cheapskates during that time of year? It's not like we need to advertise this city. We don't need the Super Bowl at all, it's just an ego feed to host it. We should send a message: be fair or go shovel snow somewhere.

Which is why I think The NFL decided to give it to Minnesota instead of New Orleans even though New Orleans brings more to the table as far as the experience. I want to hope that we did not want to suckle at the teet of the NFL and that the decision not to award us a SB was consequence for not giving in. But to know that the NFL panders to the highest bidder shows that nothing matters but money, not the history, nothing.

It's the city's tricentennial, every SB that has taken place here has been an awesome one. Fans from all over get excited about the opportunity to come here and let loose. I'll ask a simple question. Come February, would you rather drink with friends at Huberts in Minneapolis in that weather, Or have your choice of any of the world renowned eateries and bars that line the downtown area? Would you like to take your drink with you as you tour downtown? I could mention the Music, cultural experience, Scenery, clubs, oh yeah, and the Mardi Gras atmosphere but that goes without saying.

If the NFL wanted the absolute best experience for it's fans, the game would only rotate between New Orleans and Miami. But why should the NFL give two rusty pennies about fans, If you owned a restaurant called "DC Comic Soup Bar" and you served a dish called the Super Bowl, the NFL would destroy your business and put you on the street. If I did not have such a enduring love for this team, I would probably have no reason to utter the word/s NFL. If it doesn't change, it will succumb to the weight of it's own pressure.

I said it once and I'll say it again, the NFL needs New Orleans to host a Superbowl more than New Orleans needs to host a Superbowl.
