The above are his stats for his career. The guy was a great player for us for years and years. He was better than both Gene Atkins and Brett Maxie. Yet, I never hear his name mentioned on this site unless I mention it. Can we get an hoorah for old school?

Now, now, DR. Thats not true. Several of us old geezers mention him from time to time.

I suspect that because he was not a flashy O player, he is not readily remembered or thought of by many of those who came up in more recent years.

So - I readily agree that he was a very noteworthy player in Saints history (and one of my personal favorites), but not that you are the only person who mentions him. :hihi:

I remember two plays in particular. On opening day in 1978, late in the fourth quarter, he intercepted a deflected Francis (as Howard Cosell used to say) Tarkington pass at the Saints 3 (it was 3rd and 7 from the 11) and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown to preserve the upset. (Tark used to make the Saints look silly!) I can still hear Wayne Mack's call in my head. The other was the following year when Tommy knocked out (literally) a Lion receiver coming across the middle. Tommy Myers was a wicked hitter. To top it off, he intercepted Terry Bradshaw in the Pro Bowl to reserve an NFC victory. Ah, happy days.

As far as the Saints are concerned, Myers was the original 'ball hawk' and 'head hunter' in our defensive backfield.

He always found a way to get involved in a play and he could really put the leather to the competition. I'm sure that this is what helped him to pick off more than a few passes in his career.

Definitely one of my favorite players as a kid! :9:

The first NFL and first Saints game I ever saw was the game in which he ran the INT back 97 for a TD against Tarkenton and the Vikings. The Saints won, I believe 31-28.

That's how teams make kids into fans.

can this be moved to the "Geritol" board..............:)

I remember a game I saw on TV (I think one of the first as a child) where the Saints were playing the Broncos at Mile High and Tommy completely wiped out a ref and the guy was injured pretty seriously and missed the rest of the season...the ref I mean...anyone else remember that incident?

I'm glad i'm not old enough to remember him haha

Tommy Myers is still one of my favorite all time Saints, right behind Archie, Ricky Jackson, and Sam Mills.

Wow - that is a name from the past. Please, someone tell me his number wasn't 37...as soon as I saw this post, that number popped in my head.

The oddest things we remember.

Another hitter was Davey Whitsall. I use to bartend in the french quarter and Davey would come in often. I asked him how he would defend against Jerry Rice. He said knock on his *** every chance he got.

Tommy Myers was one of the best players the Saints ever had. In the bad times that he played, he was one of the few bright spots we had. There is a Uriah Heep song called "Bird Of Prey" that makes me think of Tommy whenever I hear it. someone should make a highlight clip of Myers set to that song IMO.

Are you kidding, this guy was the whole defense for years.
