The Mandalorian discussion thread (4 Viewers)

I think this article makes a good point about the effect The Mandalorian can have on the sequels.

The prequels were clunky, but I recently watched them and the Clone Wars cartoon in chronological order and TCW really does make the prequels "better" from a story standpoint. It fills holes and covers things that just weren't handled or established well.

Mando can have the same effect on the prequel series. By clarifying the rise of the First Order and maybe some of the Snoke/Palpatine questions its existence help the sequels make a little more sense.

Filoni basically made his name by salvaging the prequels with Clone Wars. While I think the sequel trilogy's failures are more substantial than the prequel trilogy's (the PT was mostly a case of bad acting, clunky dialogue, over reliance on CGI, and misfires with characters like Jar-Jar. The core narrative at least makes sense, although it's somewhat undercooked in it's presentation. The ST is nearly completely narratively incoherent, with a second movie that doesn't care about either the first or third movie and stops the story dead in its tracks because of it, and a third movie that is a slapdash ending thrown together because they had to hit a deadline and had no idea how they were going to end it. There really is an almost complete lack of cohesion between the films themselves), if anyone can turn that chicken sheet into chicken salad, he can. I do believe he has more of an uphill battle with this, but I'd really like to see some gaps filled in to at least make the ST a bit less awful.

So Moff Gideon did an interview with Entertainment Weekly and he confirmed that they are Dark Troopers. And he did it when no one asked about them, here's a quote, " So there's going to be a lot of battles and stormtroopers and all the dark troopers – everyone will get involved."

This feels like a bit of revisionism from your previous takes
Structurally (even in regards to story), you would have to do a complete tear down and rebuild - keeping only Ewan McGregor and Ray Park - with the prequels
And while I mostly agree re episode 9 (and the casino nonsense), you could get some good to great movies with some basic remodeling

No Liam Neeson or Samuel L Jackson?

I haven't really developed all my thoughts on the matter, but the complete failure of the sequel trilogy has made me re-evaluate the prequels in a lot of ways. I will say every flaw I've ever spoken about in regards to them still holds true, but I have come to accept at least they're a singular vision. The sequels are...not. to say the least. And I think you'd have to tear everything down to the ending scene of Force Awakens and start completely over from that point to make the ST work. Epiaode VII is such a burdensome failure of a movie that no conclusion ever really had a chance.

A random fact, the actor that plays Scorpius was in Episode 1 though I don't know what character. It obviously wasn't a major role but I do think he played a human.

With the prequels, I've always thought that they could be improved simply with better editing and direction. The story is there, it just needs less clutter and better pacing to tighten up the story telling. Call it a "less is more" approach -- cut out the bad dialogue and any unnecessary scenes and it allows the good stuff to stand out more, addition by subtraction.

But to your point, with the sequels there's no tangible, coherent story to tighten up and salvage. It's just a mess. They had the original cast, they had an unlimited budget, they had all the expanded universe to draw ideas from. And what we ultimately got was a remake of Episode IV, Spaceballs II, and a completely ad hoc conclusion. What a waste.
