Sticky Post
Speedweeks kicks off today in advance of next Sunday's Daytona 500 (2/17, 2:30PM EST FOX). The Clash is this Sunday, 3pm, and the duels are 7pm next Thursday, 2/14. Note also the Arca race will run this Saturday at 4pm on FS1.

What else for 2019:
- New rules package: Note that the Daytona 500 will run under the old package, but after that we will go to tapered spacers (including at Daytona and Talladega where they won't run plates anymore), bigger spoiler, bigger splitter, wider radiator pan, and "aero/brake ducts". It's all similar to the 2018 All-Star package and designed to reduce horsepower but improve stability and throttle response . . . with the hope of reducing the aero advantage that the leader has had at the intermediate and speedway tracks under the old package. https://m.nascar.com/news-media/2018/10/02/2019-rules-packages-announced-monster-energy-series/

- New post-race inspection procedure: Post-race inspection will happen immediately following the race and will include first and second place, and other randomly selected cars. If you fail post-race you are disqualified and scored as last in the race and stages. So if the winner fails, the second place is declared the winner for all intents and purposes . . . any stage points for DQ'd cars will go to the next car on the pylon. This will mean that the race winner will be confirmed by weekend's end, rather than having to wait on inspection and penalty procedures under the old rules (often not announced until Tuesday or Wednesday).

- Notable team/driver changes:
Martin Truex and Cole Pearn move over to JGR proper at the 19
Kurt Busch to the 1 at CGR; Jamie Mac running the Daytona 500 (in the 40) and then retiring to the Fox broadcast roster
Daniel Suarez moves over to the 41 at SHR
Ryan Newman runs the 6 full-time at Rousch
Daniel Hemric (rookie) will be in the 8 at Childress
Matt DiBenedetto will be in the 95
Kasey Kahne and AJ Allmendinger are not racing
Chad Knaus and Jimmie aren't together, Chad to the 24 (Byron) and Kevin Meendering comes over from the Xfinity 1 car (E. Sadler) to lead the 48 crew

Yeah but less so for racing I think. It’s not like soccer or basketball where the fan presence is a big part of the feel of the game.
True. I'm just used to seeing a bunch of folks at the infield track soaking it all in. I've never been to a NASCAR race, but I'm sure hanging out in the infield would be a ton of fun.

So we're going racing. Brad is on the pole by random draw. At Darlington. Nascar coming in with guns blazing. They aren't even going to have practice on the track. Just forking going racing. I got the 11 in my pick 'em.

I plan to watch. I need to remind myself to set the DVR tomorrow.

No practice and no qualifying will make this race real interesting. It will come down to the pit crews and the initial set-up and adjustments they make during the early pit stops. Weather looks to not be a problem since the forecast is for sunny and 86

I definitely think that there's a challenge here for broadcasting (all sports) to try to do something to replace the crowd of fans. Fox will certainly try some stuff. We'll see.

I was at the last Darlington race last September - met my buddy from Mandeville who lives in Brevard NC, he brought his two boys for their first race. It was crazy because Hurricane Dorian was approaching and the SC was well in the cone. The SC governor had announced that the state of emergency would begin Monday morning (Labor Day) - the Southern 500 was Sunday evening (Labor Day weekend). Everyone was pretty much in the mindset of 'go the race and then wake up and deal with this hurricane.'

About 5 minutes before pre-race ceremonies were to start, a line of thunderstorms blew up in the summer heat. It was a pretty good sized cell - might have caused a postponed race in most circumstances. My buddy was like "dude, this is heavy, should we leave? Aren't they going to cancel it?"

It looked to me like from the radar, the cells would eventually move past and there was nothing else out there. And with a hurricane approaching, they had to get the race in that night no matter what. I told him, "I think they're going to do this thing - we just need to hang out." So we hung out. For hours.

Skies cleared up and the jet dryers got out there. MRN confirmed on the radio that Nascar intended to get the whole race in because skies were clear and the following morning, SC was going under state of emergency. They started pre-race ceremonies around 10pm - and the race started around 10:30. The Southern 500 is a long race - one of the few 500-milers left on the schedule. It was a good race. The air temperature felt fanastic, everyone was tired but Erik Jones got his first Cup win . . . literally at 2:00am.

We went back to the hotel by the interstate and passed out.

Unreal how Ryan Newman is going to run in this race after that horrific crash at Daytona to start the season. I thought he was likely dead but if he did survive so injured that he would have to retire.

Was watching it live and thought the same thing. When the network refused to show them taking him out of the car, I was thinking he was toast. Back racing already is crazy

I was just a little overcome with emotion. Seeing Ryan in a fire suit. Realizing that we're about to go racing. I haven't really been emotional much during this madness, I've had too much going on. But for a brief moment there, it hit me just how messed up this has been. Got choked up as I opened my first race beer in 2 and a half months.

I can't wait to see this race.

And holy crap I completely forgot about Matt Kenseth being in the 42. That whole thing happened, yikes. I think under the circumstances, it was actually far less covered in the media than it would have been but for the pandemic.
