It doesn't look rotten. (Could those dark areas around the brightly colored inside of the trunk be the scorch marks???) Maybe a major wind gust. I assumed lightning too but don't see the scorch marks either. Unless maybe they're on the other side of the tree. Whatever it was that split that 200 year old oak tree had to be plenty strong, no matter what it was.

I watched this play out live on WWL-TV today.
The news reporter on the scene (Thanh Truong) really ripped into the guy as he was interviewing him after his boat 'rescue' back to high ground.
As bad as he must have felt for ruining his truck, the TV news audience got to enjoy the chastisement at his expense.
