A year ago, the Saints orchestrated one of the all-time great NFL turnarounds, thanks in large part to one of the all-time great free-agent pickups, quarterback Drew Brees.

It's too early to tell if any teams helped themselves as much this year. NFL teams spent more money than ever during the first two weeks of free agency. But there was a shortage of marquee players available.

Here's an early look at the winners and losers of the NFL's version of March Madness:

WINNERS:

1. New England. Think its dynasty was coming to an end? Not quite. The Patriots look like the early Super Bowl favorites after signing the biggest difference-maker available in free agency, former Ravens linebacker Adalius Thomas.

That move alone was enough to make the Patriots the biggest winners in free agency. Remember, they were a pretty darn good team to start with. But they also addressed one of their biggest weaknesses by bringing in three receivers, Donté Stallworth, Wes Welker and Kelley Washington.
