The Saints didn’t win the Super Bowl last week, and they didn’t secure the top pick in the draft this week against Carolina.

As much as people wanted this story to be free of adversity, there are going to be some challenging games as the Saints continue to adjust to life without Drew Brees – and that adjustment is even harder when more than half of the offensive coaches get sidelined. You may not want to hear excuses after New Orleans got so thoroughly outplayed during Sunday’s 26-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers. And that’s fine. This is simply a reminder that these Saints are going to need some time to find their identity and figure out how to get through tough times, and to not get too high or low while that process plays out.

The way Sunday’s game played out, it wouldn’t have mattered who was at quarterback if that person was someone other than Drew Brees. The Panthers attacked Jameis Winston and exposed some vulnerabilities in New Orleans’ ability to set its protections. When Brees was the quarterback, he set the protections and handled all the responsibilities at the line of scrimmage. His ability to do all of those things and effectively communicate is a significant reason there was a belief the Saints’ pieces on the offensive line were infinitely interchangeable without any significant expectation of regression. ...
