It's always interesting when something happens to hear what comes from people. With Rankins going down for probably a quarter of the season, we hear "next man up".

The fact is this is a significant blow to a team trying to find it's way back to respectability on defense. This was the cornerstone guy. Sure you want coaches saying we are going to move forward, next man up, etc. but the truth is there is no next man.

Will have Fairly and and second year unproven Davison help. Yes but make not mistake this will affect the psyche of the team. Noted yesterday the defense was much less spirited in practice after Rankins went down.

The spin machine won't fix the facts.

Rankin isn't a cornerstone yet. He's on the same level as Fairley. Jumping to conclusions will get you no where.

Yes, they really should have coach Payton give a tearful update to the media that the season is over and really, we shouldn't bother this year. I just can't believe they have the nerve to plan on continuing on given the irreplaceability of a rookie who has never played a down in the NFL, never mind the fact he will probably only miss 4 games. It's over!

It's understandable the diminish of sprit after the injury , probably would be the same for a player that most would assume wouldn't make the next cut, One the injury to a teammate and secondly the fact that it ceases all momentum of the day , it's not like if it were a player that would t make the team the rest of the players would have just stepped over the guy and kept going as if nothing would have happened

From what we have seen of SR it's going to be a loss but honestly he is an unproven player as well,

Next man up isn't. Spin it's the only option , SR looked very good but cornerstone is a bit much to label him - hopefully he proves himself to be such .

If they were, in fact, less spirited after Rankins' injury (I didn't read this anywhere), it is more likely attributable to the fact that a comrade went down -- not specifically that it was Rankins. Also, the fact that someone goes down is likely to remind the players that they could go down with injury just as easily as Sheldon did. It brings it to the forefront. For better or for worse, they probably dialed things back a little bit so as to not risk injury themselves.

Think about it like this: if a coworker injures themselves in a particular manner, do you become more conscious of what happened, especially if you're doing the same action? Again, it doesn't matter if it was Billy Joe or Joe Billy that got injured -- it's the fact that someone became injured in the first place that leads to that line of thinking.

I'm not in their heads -- but I can almost guarantee you that the players were not thinking that their season was down the toilet thanks to this injury.

The David Onyemata pick looks real good right now, plus we have a serviceable Jenkins don't we. Sure the Rankins injury hurts, but every team for the most part losses 2-3 guys each year. The teams that don't are the lucky ones that have an easy road to the playoffs. Our D only has to get minimally better to make the playoffs. . .

So we are doomed behause an unproven player went down and needs to get replaced by another unproven player.

Ok...
