The Unemployment Line: COVID-19 Edition (1 Viewer)

Sorry to hear this. And sorry for the slow reply.

Indiana seems to be fast, which is amazing. I filled out my UE back on April 17th. I still haven't even been properly registered into their system yet.

I think by Thursday I'll give them a call, if I haven't been transferred over, because I also may want to discuss my questionnaire. They worded a few things oddly.
Indiana words their questionnaire oddly so that we make mistakes. They want to deny unemployment. In 2008-2009 they fought us at every opportunity. They even went so far as to say that the steel industry is seasonal so that they could avoid payment. Stay skeptical and keep on your state until you get paid.

The one I hate, being that we got put on part time, is this one..."is there anything preventing you from getting a job?" Well, yes.. I have one still. No.. because I'd take an equivalent full time job. It's not the same when you're just underemployed vs unemployed.

It took me about 2.5 weeks from the time I filed until I got my first direct deposit (I live in Alabama). My wife is self-employed and has been filing as long as I have and still has not received anything. She had to submit her 1099/tax stuff to the state last week, so we're hoping that comes thru soon since we have not received any stimulus money yet. A lot of people that have filed even before I did have not received anything.

I went back to work yesterday with a 20% COVID increase, so I'm hoping we can make it work till she gets her unemployment or work picks back up.

I have no answers yet, but will find out very soon. My wife took medical leave today. She's considered an essential employee. She is diabetic and her doctor advised her to limit contact and stay home as much as possible. We have saved well, and can ride it out for
a few months if needed. It's still scary though. If I got sick and had to take off as well, we'd be in trouble before then

well who would have thought Louisiana would be better than some other states at this. It should be on our welcome signs on the interstate. "Welcome to Louisiana where we know how to do Unemployment"

seems like Rick Scott hired Floridaman to run our unemployment system intentionally into the ditch.

Re: user name
For Louisiana, they assign you your user name and it's all caps your first name initial, your last name, and your last 4 ss#. You should change it to something you will remember. Online is the way to go unless you want a 2-hour phone call.

They're making progress. Lots of people deemed ineligible though...

This is exactly why we need... and i hate to say it because people automatically get political... UBI.. You know, Universal Basic Income, the thing presidential candidate Andrew Yang was touting a few months ago as something we would need 5 or 10 years down the road becuase of disappearing jobs.. People laughed at him.. well, they’re not laughing now- at least not the ones who are paying attention . /PoliticsOff

We need UBI immediately because too many people are falling through the cracks.. just look at this thread, then multiply that by tens of millions of people.. Gig workers, 1099 contractors, underemployed folks... To me, this situation is a lot like Katrina on a much larger scale, in a lot of ways.. but specifically- in Katrina, lots of crazy ish went down.. but things happened, and then years later , some things were remedied, and there was some accountability.. Now is not the time to ask questions; now is the time to give people money.. and just like in Katrina, where people eventually went to jail in some cases- we can purse fraud charges down the road, and have accountability down the road- but people need money in their hands NOW.. ask questions later.

It's a broken system that was purposefully designed to not work and millions wasted on crony contractors in order to do it.

Rick Scott should have been in prison instead of being governor and now he's our Senator. When will people learn?

Basically, if you were full time, and put down to part time, for only 24 hours a week (like we are), if you make $11.46/hr or more, you don't get a dime from Unemployment.

The only "full time" folks it would come close to helping are those who make the Florida minimum wage, at best. Even that would only be a little.

I sure hope this doesn't screw me on the federal payments. I'm still just waiting for a PIN number to check my status. Only one guy from the same time frame of my filing from my job got that, and he was also told his application was incomplete and to refile. But at least he has a PIN.

Still twisting in the wind. This forking sucks.

So many are. It's crazy. I'm pretty much sold on implementing some sort of UBI at this point. I'm tired of seeing people get left behind because of some dumb rule or another.

UBI is the most sensible thing to do at this point.. People will be offended at the idea of simply ‘handing out’ money, yet those same people will say zilch about the corporations and Billionaires who are profiteering from this pandemic... Zilch.

Yeah, I'd say figure out some sort of minimum base level of income for those who can't or won't work, then those who work earn above the UBI level.
