The Unemployment Line: COVID-19 Edition (1 Viewer)

Looks like I'll get some state Benefits. Of course, it's weird. They denied me for my first eligible week, due to 'excess reductions', meaning, I made too much.

The second week, was a 'waiting week' that was waived by the governor, but I guess that doesn't count? I'm still getting $0 for that one.

Third week, I am slated for payment. Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow or Wednesday.

Currently on the 4th week.

If you are approved to receive even $1 from the state- then you can also expect to receive the additional $600 from the feds each week.. at least, that’s how it’s worked for everyone I’ve talked to during the shutdown who’s gotten approved for any amount of unemployment benefits, in several different states, including myself.

And if there is any ‘back pay’ that you’re entitled to, meaning each week since your job elimination/reduction that you should have been paid UI- then it might all hit your bank account at once.. i talked to a coworker in Wisconsin last week who was really stressed out b/c she hadn’t received a dime .. then the next morning she woke up to $4,800.00 in unemployment direct deposits, dating back to March.. . from what I’ve heard anecdotally though, the ‘back pay’ thing seems to vary by state.. this info comes from the half-dozen or so family and friends I’ve talked to over the last couple months who've gotten laid off.

Well, I got the $600 payment last week. Not sure for what week it was applied to.

I'll know more tomorrow. (when I expect money to be in my account)

It's just odd that they tagged two weeks ago as "waiting week", when the waiting week was waived by DeSantis over a month ago. There should't be a waiting week.

The games that are played with unemployment are infuriating. In Indiana it seems like the questions change every week. They're telling us that they have waived the requirement to look for a new job, but every week I get flagged because I don't submit proof that I have been looking for a new job.

Then you get politicians climbing up on their soap box saying things like, "maybe if people didn't eat avocados, they would have six months of salary in the bank for emergencies." And then they turn around and give trillions of dollars in bailouts to corporations that just received one and a half trillion dollars in tax cuts just a year ago. Maybe if those corporations hadn't made campaign contributions they would have had six months of expenses saved for emergencies.

AMEN!

There is some truth about spending habits and savings. I won't deny that ever. At the same token, why don't any businesses have operations money socked away for events like this?

I wonder what our weekly payroll is and how that compares to just pure "profit" we made last quarter. Or better yet, how much profit growth. Just that growth could probably fund us for a while.. but I digress..

Yeah that’s my biggest problem with the “people shouldn’t get more in Unemployment than they were making while working!” Crowd.. .. #1) it’s proof that lots of people have been criminally underpaid, barely getting by on slave wages for years.. and #2) if you’re gonna get outraged about Joe Schmo on the street getting $800/week unemployment, I’m okay with you being outraged IF, and only IF- you have an equal amount of outrage, or even MORE outrage, for the Corporations who are also recovering the equivalent of ‘Unemployment payments’ to the tune of Billions of dollars.. You cant have it both ways, you cant rage at the single mom making $30k a year who’s finally getting a little bit of relief, while not being JUST AS ANGRY at the corporations doing the exact same thing.

Yup.

If it wasn't for the Fed putting in a big chunk of change, in Florida, Unemployment Insurance benefits only pay $275/week, which is equivalent to $14,300 a year or $6.875 an hour.

That's a really tough pill for someone making $70k/year and laid off. Heck, it's a tough pill for anyone, since it's under Min wage.

With the $600/week added, it would be an equivalent to $45,500 per year, or $21.875/hour. Being, that it is a short term deal, and helps account for pandemic pricing (lots of grocery items not on sale now). Not a bad wage, but I've been past that for a long long time.

For those recently unemployed or Underemployed... how has the process worked?

I.e. did you file online with your state? How long to get a response? How long to get a payment? Have you received the federal booster payment?

What were some of the first things you cut from your expenses?

And for those in rougher financial shape, are you doing ok?

I filled out my application on Friday, pretty quick. I dont transition to part time until next week. I haven't heard anything, but I expected it to be a while.
I filed online on May 10th and got my benefits letter on the 14th. I came in at the end of the rush so they must have fixed things. There is a waiting week in Oregon though, so that's done will see how it goes.

I made sure I selected maximum deductions everywhere and I still ended up owing the State almost 500 for the money I received on their program. Awesome!

ok, so I loaded up the taxes but never submitted because I was going to try to use the state site for state taxes and save some money. I went back in to submit this morning and both Fed and State changed big time. I contacted support and it said it was due to Cares act exemptions for unemployment. I am a little nervous about this coming back on me. Was this part of the most recent Biden Bill?

I need to look down this gift horses throat and make sure he isn’t going to bite my arse when I’m walking away.

Pretty sure, yes.
