The Saints, about $30 million under the salary cap, can address some of their needs

To pay Asante Samuel or Lance Briggs, or not to pay? That's the $80-million question facing NFL teams as free agency kicks off Friday morning.
Samuel, a 27-year-old cornerback, and Briggs, a 27-year-old outside linebacker, are the two best defensive players available in a shallow free-agent pool.
But at what cost? Each is expected to demand a long-term contract of about $10 million per year.
Either player would be a nice fit in New Orleans, where the top priority this season is spicing up the defense.
