It seems that this is the year of run control for the New Orleans Saints. I like that. In addition, it seems that the defense, under the new coaching staff, is really rising to the challenge of staying in the game and playing to their fullest potential. I like that too.

Since I was a young lad, back to 1968, I can remember only a few years of awesome running back talents that really made something of themselves. From Jim Taylor, Muncie and Galbreath, George Rogers, Rueben Mayes, the Deuce, and others from years gone by, I like this running corps.

So what do I not like? I don't like holding back one of the most prolific offenses the Saints have ever fielded. I don't like that we are only scoring an average of 36 points a game in the last 4. I don't like bye weeks when the team is healthy.

Oh well, like my wife says, I can't have everything my way.

Go Saints....

All the running backs you mentioned were very good in a Saints uniform except for Jimmy Taylor. He was all but finished when he was w/the Saints. Gained less than 400 yards rushing and averaged only 3 yards a carry. Remember Earl Campbell in a Saints uniform? Taylor was nearly as bad. The team paid him a fortune, plus had to give up a first-round draft pick to Green Bay. Why is his number retired? Doug Atkins, I can somewhat understand, but not Taylor. The best runners in the first year were actually Ernie Wheelright and a rookie, Don McCall.

Later, Fears blamed Vic Schwenk and John Mecom for bringing in Taylor; Schwenk (the G.M. at the time) blamed Fears and Mecom; Mecom said that he was under pressure from Senator Russell Long to bring Taylor to New Orleans. Long had been very important in getting the franchise for New Orleans and in the ultimate selection of John Mecom as owner. Those years were really a "Black and Gold Circus." Bad trades, bad drafts, no one was accountable. For the fans, it was "promises made ... promises broken."

Yes hate the bye week. The team needed it though.
Yes love that the Saints can run when needed. Pass when needed. Play great D when needed. And don't forget the punting game.
