This team really needs an ELITE kick returner or punt returner (1 Viewer)

We need to work on blocking for our returners. As soon as the Ball gets to Reggie, everyone is in his face before he can take the first step. Roby never has a good hole to punch through.

We just need to get better kick/punt coverage. That's our biggest weakness right now...

We've been lucky so far that it hasn't cost us a game.

We have an elite punt returner and he has been doing his job the entire season. Teams are afraid to kick to Reggie, we get great field position off punts even though he doesn't get a chance to return punts. Give it a couple more games, some coach is going to get real smart and say, "hey, Reggie isn't returning punts like he was last year". Said team will kick to Reggie and Reggie will make them pay...and once again teams will avoid kicking the ball to him.

You make some good points, but I think what the OP is talking about is calling Reggie an "elite" punt returner when alot of his returns net negative yards.

Very lucky. We've been beating ppl pretty badly thus far, but if we play a team like Atl or NE where the game is close, a busted kick or punt return can make the difference.

Can't make something out of nothing. This year he hasn't even had time to accelerate before he has to dodge a player. We need better blocking above all else. Compare that to Darren Sproles last night who was in a full sprint before he encountered his first tackler.

I agree. Not to mention we've faced some pretty good punters that have been instructed to punt the ball high and not give Reggie a chance to return it.

Reggie had three punt returns for TD's in half a season last year. He is the elite other teams talk about. He could be more consistent at not dancing around before taking off, but his top end potential at returning punts is one of the best in the league.

I've been against him returning kicks, but I have to wonder if we'll dabble in that again.

I know he wasn't spectacular at it at USC, but why not make the other team get nervous?

Reggie proved last season he was an elite punt returner in the league, but he's done nothing so far this year. Have teams kicked away from him? In some cases, yes. However, he's had some chances to make some returns and the results have not been very good. I have expressed my desire to put Lance Moore back returning punts for a full game, and see if he can do any better. I don't think the coaches, however, will want to risk injury to Lance. He's too important as a receiver.

Roby has not been explosive at all on kickoff returns. I think he's on the roster more because of his coverage skills on punts and kickoffs. I wasn't impressed with Meachem returning kickoffs either. You could also say that Meachem, like Moore, is really too valuable as a WR to risk injury on kickoff returns.

When you're 5-0, there's not much to complain about. Poor special teams play, however, is going to cost this team an important game unless it improves. McMahon needs to get his unit to play better. Remember that the only TD Buffalo scored was on the fake field goal. We've had an extra point and a short field goal blocked, and the coverage units just haven't been consistent. Morstead, Jenkins, Reis, and M. Mitchell have appeared to have played well, but the others need to step it up.

i think roby and bush are just fine. ball security worries me a little with reggie but honestly, our offense has no problems working with a long field. i say its not broke so nothing needs fixing here.

Holliday is 5'5" and 160 pounds

Sproles is 5"6 and 181 pounds

Holliday also only runs maybe less than 5 plays a game on the field besides returns anyway becuase he is so injury prone with his size. His speed is great but he has it more as an advantage in college than the pros where everybody is fast.

Michael lewis was not much bigger at 5'7" 165

Holiday may not ever be a running back in the NFL, but he could make his mark as a return specialist.

I do not think its likely, but I am just saying.
