As the days roll by and we get closer to the Super Bowl, it seems that Payton is waiting for one of the assistants/coaches of the 2 teams left to find his new DC. Which might mean that Romeo is not in the mix until Payton finds out that someone from the 2 teams left isn't interested or isn't allowed to make the move. Just a thought...

Or it might just mean that Payton is doing his due diligence in his search for a new DC and covering all his bases. No need to rush into a decision without doing your homework first.

I think it's obvious they want to interview someone on either the Niners or Ravens staffs, it happens every year, I think it's a great move to want to hire coaches from successful franchises.

Like SP said, "You want other teams to want to hire your current coaches and assistants, when nobody's calling you for permission to interview your assistants, you know you aren't hiring good people."

I would agree he is probably waiting for someone from SF or Balt. However, another longshot may be someone from the college ranks. If he is interested in someone from the college ranks, he could be waiting until after national signing day on Feb 6.

This was suggested by Brian Alee Walsh the other day. He suggested there might be a college coach who requested that he be able to finish recruiting before an announcement was made.

We are in a different situation then after black monday. On such date you have to hurry because of the competition between organizations that are turning their coaching staff.

Now, the only real major hole we have is defensive coordinator. But we are not having any competition, even Philly seems to be looking at other candidates.

I think there is no rush to find the 4 positions we need to fill.

I think they have made their idea on the people they would like, but not going to rush, specially with all the social comitments the Superbowl brings to the local host.

Romeo is likely either Plan B for DC, or Payton hopes he can be the D-line coach. Remember that Romeo is owed money next year from the Browns AS LONG as he is not a coordinator/head coach. Or Crennel is just one of MANY DC candidates and the Saints want to bring them all in for interviews. So they are waiting for their DCs on their list (among them likely position coaches from 49ers) to finish Superbowl.

OL Coach is a pretty major hole to fill and becomes even bigger if/when we lose Bushrod.

Philly has the same list of candidates that we have. We are really fighting over the same list of rumored guys. It will be important to act 1st because I doubt SF or BAL will allow two assistants to leave in the same off season.

When is signing day?

Payton likely has known for months he was going in a different direction at DC and that he was going 3-4. If I had to guess he already has spoken with a coach at the college level about the position and already has everything lined up. He really could have been speaking off and on with college coaches about the position for months without violating the suspension.

Which is what ive been thinking.

I like the potential candidates...especially from the Ravens and 49'ers...but the tone that payton used when discussing how his lack of knowledge of the read option scares him was enough for me to take notice.

I can certainly tell u it doesn't scare him because he wants to use it on offense.

Answer. Get one of these college coaches. Which is why ive been sticking with Grantham. ANother plus is that he oversaw the transition from a 4-3 to a 3-4 @ Georgia so he has experience in that area as well.

Also in an article i posted Grantham hasn't mentioned or denied that particular teams were interested in him. Also philly was very interested but have sense went in other directions. Once it was made known in NO we were switching to the 3-4 i would imagine that our situations is better for a coach to come into than going to the eagles...where the HC is a newbie too. Meaning if he doesn't do well his 1st season...and its because of the D.. he is likely to be on the chopping block. Not so here.

So im willing to bet once signing day is over with ull really see us make some pushes.

Well be interviewing a lot of guys inbetween then and after the SB but i can bet that a decision wont be made quick..and we'll have at least 1 college coach come in.

There are only a few more D coordinator positions available and more than a few D coordinators still hanging out there. One of them is going to have to except a lesser job. Our new D coordinator might have his pick of guys he may want to come in.

I think it would also benefit us to draft denard robinson...or pick him up as a udfa so he can come in and be our scout team QB. IT would help a lot with the read option looks. Just another way to help payton understand it.
