I just wanted everyone's opinion. I for one, do not think sports are rigged. Too many people involved for it not to get leaked. However, my friend today after watching Michigan's implosion to Indiana tells me this is why he doesn't watch sports. It's all rigged. He then went on to mention the Sains/Vikings NFC championship game being rigged which did not sit well with me :)

So what do you think?

I don't believe sports are rigged. At least, for the most part (outside of wrestling).

Here's my reasoning:
1) You can pay-off refs and umpires to call games to favore one side.
2) you can throw a game by intentionally not making a play or multiple plays.
3) You CAN'T count on a player to make a spectacular clutch catch, shot, or hit.

There is too much of a margin for error. You drastically increase a teams chance of winning. But you also have to do it without making it seem so? I just can't imagine it would be possible without having become general knowledge by now.

I completely agree. Plus, Pros may have a financial incentive to throw a game, but why college? Why would kids hurt their chances of playing at the next level or coaches risking their jobs? Doesn't add up. Plus I am sure a disgruntled coach or player would have spoken about this if it were true.

Not the kids so much (point shaving has happened before though), but certainly the refs. Whether it's them betting on their own games or people paying them off to win on the wagers made on the game. We all know there's big money in betting, especially during the NCAA basketball tournament.

Of course there's the ref scandal that happened not too many years ago in the NBA. Wouldn't be surprised if it still happens there.

Right, I can see the refs doing that. But i know people that believe that at the beginning of the season the NCAA,NBA,NFL etc. picks a team to win it all. Then all of the other teams follow orders of when to win or lose from the NCAA,NBA,NFL etc. Pretty absurd. At least when it is the refs throwing a game, the other team can possibly still win. Just a huge mountain to over come.

If you think of all the thousands of people involved in the NFL, from players to coaches to refs to front office people, there are just too many that would have to be in on it to keep it secret. Point shaving is one thing but to say that an entire season is choreographed, it's just not plausible.

Take the Saints - Vikings game for example. If you believe that game was rigged then you believe that Favre threw that interception to Porter on purpose. The payoff he was getting would have to be huge to overcome the money and glory he would have gotten by going to the Super Bowl. I have trouble believing that anyone would make that trade off. People that believe that sports are rigged are just another flavor of tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists.

My thoughts exactly! Seems that some retiree or fired coach/player would have spoken out if this were going on also!
