BATON ROUGE — At the moment, Patrick Mahomes is the reigning Super Bowl champion quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Commentary

Three years ago this week, he was about to become a New Orleans Saint with the 11th pick of the first round, as he surprisingly lasted through the first nine selections without being taken. The Buffalo Bills were on the clock at No. 10. Then the Saints.

During the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday night, the Saints may have a chance to take a quarterback in the first round if Justin Herbert of Oregon surprisingly falls to the Saints' slot at No. 24, or if Jordan Love of Utah State is still around, which is more likely to happen.

"I think that any time you have a chance to get a quality quarterback prospect, regardless of your quarterback situation, you'd like to take advantage of that," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said on a Zoom teleconference Wednesday. "For us, it hasn't come. It hasn't been the match where we're picking a prospect that we really like."
