TIL: Today I Learned... (2 Viewers)

TIL (at least on the cruise ship I'm on)
that elevators ding once if going up and twice if going down. i guess i never really paid attention to that the other 1000 times I've ridden an elevator..

Today I learned about Pelorus Jack.
Pelorus Jack (fl. 1888 – April 1912) was a Risso's dolphin that was famous for meeting and escorting ships through a stretch of water in Cook Strait, New Zealand, for 24 years between 1888 and 1912.

Here’s his memorial at French Pass, NZ. Visited in April.

I don't why I'm only realizing this (likely due to ego).

But I've always assumed that I could explain anything to anyone. That if I just used the right words and analogies; painted a vivid enough picture; give it enough time...

Eventually, I could get you to understand where I was coming from. Not agree with me per se, but to understand me.

TIR that my words are only as effective as the recipient's capacity to process them.

You can describe something in the most articulate way, with all the relevant details. But if the recipient is limited (intellectually/cognitively), it's like trying to describe a rainbow to someone with no sight.

I've probably spent half my life asking blind people to picture a rainbow.

TIL what knolling is. Knolling is simply the process of arranging objects so they are parallel or at 90-degree angles. It helps keep everything organised and when photographed creates clean, noticeable images.

Having trouble distinguishing it from anal retentiveness, though.

My guess would have been something about grass, knolls, a rifle......

This is the reason I gave up discussing politics with almost all people.

TIL: In 2009 Stephen Hawking threw a lavish party at Cambridge. No one showed. The next day he sent out the invitations. He said if time travel was real, someone in the future would have shown up. He explained that he liked simple experiments….and champagne.
Plot twist- he did all this in 2029
