Tim said that on the very first play of his rookie season, Mike Singletarry came up to him as soon as the offense broke the huddle and told him not to crash down, to stay "home" instead of be aggresive because a reverse was coming his way. As predicted, Ryan followed Singletarry's instructions and recorded a tackle for an 11 yard loss on his first play of his pro career. Later, he found out Singletarry knew to do this from film study.
How this relates to us and our defense is that we now have a guy who studies film just as passionately as Singletarry. Vilma has been a film buff since Miami, and by his own mouth is the reason he was Defensive rookie of the year and two time probowler. What this means is now we have a semi coach, or defensive cooridinator if you will, on the field telling our players what is coming, where to be, when not to be aggressive, when to be, and so on and so forth. I am not sure most of us realize how much of an impact Vilma will have for us. It will be akin to Drew Brees taking over for Brooks. Sure, he can't do it all on his own, but his direction and play makes those around him better, and when things go well, confidence gets built, and when we go into a game knowing we will win instead of hoping, we will be a force for years to come, on both sides of the ball.
