The last thing an NFL coach wants to do in the first week of January is look back on a just-completed 16-game schedule and stew over what might have been.
The reason is simple: If you’re not in the playoffs, it’s too late to do anything about it now.
The only thing you can do is get started on next season by pinpointing the things that caused you to miss the postseason and begin to fix them to make sure they don’t crop up again.
Such was the case for New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton this week. In the aftermath of a 7-9 season, which closed with a final two-game losing streak that denied his team a second straight playoff appearance, Payton deliberately began to look for answers.
