I don't think it could be debated that prior to today, Tom Petty was the coolest white man alive. He was the white guy version of Morgan Freeman.

He will be sorely missed.

If someone came up to me and asked who's music career would you want, I would say Tom Petty

He was in one of the more succesful american rock and roll bands ever
He was successful in his solo career
He got to be in a band with Dylan, Roy Orbison and George Harrison (A BEATLE!) and the other guy (yeah yeah Jeff Lynne)

He went on tour and played backing band to Dylan AND Johnny Cash.

He played on several Johnny Cash albums and probably lots of others, that's just all I could think of off the top of my head.

And he was probably still able to walk down the street and not be hounded by a whole lot of people.

The only one I would think can compete with that is Dave Grohl.
