Yes, I have to get a tooth pulled. I had a root canal done when I was 18 (27 years ago) and had it capped. Well, December of 2015, I have an abscess and come to find out, the tooth that had the root canal done actually cracked after all those years of crunching. It's a dead tooth so it won't heal itself. I go to the dentist, they cut off the old cap, pop a temporary on and everything is good. So a week ago (14 months with a temporary cap), the temporary cap falls off. Okay, it happens. Now the fun part.

The dentist is ready to pop a new cap on until I hear her say, "Ooooh. Well...mmm." And that's never good. My #14 molar is now a "hopeless tooth" and has to come out. My dentist refers me to an oral surgeon/implant specialist. I go for a consult and they quote me (ready for this?), $5,000.00!! That's extraction, bone graft, titanium implant and cap. My car trade in value was a fifth of this tooth!

So, I'm thinking, I just find an oral surgeon and have the thing just pulled out and I walk away.

Anyone here have a tooth pulled with no implant? And if so, how is everything? Of course, the one who wants to pop in the implant is giving me all the reasons TO get it done. My thought is he needs a boat payment and I came walking through the door.

Thanks all.

My husband's having issues with an implant right now because he grinds his teeth. It's seriously aggravating a previously minor TMJ issues. I would make sure you don't have anything else going on that the implant might interfere with.

I know I'm not a teeth grinder. My wife tells me ALL THE TIME that I sleep with my mouth wide open, snoring away.

I've had three of my back-four molars pulled with no implant or bridge. If you're fortunate, it's no biggie. The risk is that without something to push against, the opposing molar can start to move around and become a problem.

A bridge would have check more affordable.

I had my bottom left molar pulled, same thing root canal 25+ years ago. Looked at the implant route, 5k hahaha, but did spring 1k on a bridge because insurance actually helped a little on it.

Now same tooth on right side (not a root canal) actually cracked and half fell out. It doesn't hurt so I'm leaving it. It makes a great storage place for a snack, I kinda like the little piece of king cake or hamburger that I get to have a few hours after I eat.

They suggested gum surgery, pulling, implanting, all for another 5k +. Yeah right mister dentist man.

I had a molar pulled and didn't have anything put in its place for $30 at the LSU dental school like 10 years ago. My cousin was in dental school there at the time so I didn't have to sit on the waiting list, but that is an option for you for the cheapest price possible. Call up the closest dental school and see how long it takes to get in to see them.

There is nothing wrong with seeking a second opinion. I would not, however, seek one on a message board :ezbill:. Schedule another appointment for an evaluation with another dentist. The exam fee will be minimal compared to the price of an implant and then you'll be more confident in your decision.

Two things to remember for every dental patient:
1) I would encourage you to stay away from corporate dentistry (Castle, etc.) and
2) do not to let insurance drive your treatment (they care about their bottom line, not you or your health).

The dental school suggestion isn't a bad one, if you have the time and patience.

Yep, like getting your car repaired at the local high school tech-Ed program. I've don that twice with good results but had to wait 1-2 months to get in the shop.

University of Maryland is the nearest dental school.

Good luck my brother!

had one yanked in the back after an abscess (worst pain ever). it was either a $250 extraction fee or a $1200 root canal. I do not have dental insurance so i opted for extraction. At the time, my dentist told me it wouldn't be a problem and she has been correct so far. I never thought of it as a big deal as long as it didnt show when i smiled.

I had a tooth break in half years ago. I got an oral surgeon to cut what was left out and never looked back. That was probably fifteen years ago and I haven't had any problems since. It was an upper, two back from my left bicuspid.

You probably made the right decision. Root canals and crowns usually end up having to come out completely anyway down the road. I have a crown right now that I'm having trouble with. I should have just removed it instead of paying all of that money to be miserable. You live and you learn.

You should look into water-lase technology and find a dentist in your area that has it. It seems like recovery would be better, with a much greater margin of error in the hands of the surgeon. A lazer supercharges water to form a small stream that can cut gum and bone without drilling. Think tiny power washer. No, I have not had it done, so I cannot give firsthand knowledge. If I had to have work done, that's what I would do.
