I finally gave up on Suse and installed ubuntu 6.06, got the ATI driver installed and just played Doom 3. I swear it's smoother than on XP. And I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get suse to run the fglrx driver. Kept locking my system up.

Anyway, has anyone tried out Ubuntu 6.10 yet? I know it's only been out a few days, but I was curious what you thought of it. I'm almost afraid to install it now that I got this one working.

been running 6.06 for a while still learning, though in my opinion not fast enough, love ubuntu

I'm out of the loop. What is Ubuntu....OS from Linux? Newer/different than Mandriva?

It's a Linux system that was made a bit simpler than most. It's a good system to transition from XP to Linux. If I can get everything else to work now. My games was step 1.

My next step is playing my mp3s and mpegs from a network drive that's on an xp system. The only way I can do it now is to copy the file to the linux machine. Does anyone have some advice on that one? I'm thinking I have to somehow mount that drive.

to access xp partition you have to install smb, but it wil play them, I also have an nas drive where i keep all that on so i can access it from any machine

I'm not moving to 6.10. I have 6.06 right where I want it. Maybe with the next one in 6 months I'll upgrade

Yes, Buickman, most games I run on Linux DO run better, IMO. Glad you got it going, easy, huh??

To access an XP partition (local disk) you don't have to do anything. It will be recognized. For accessing a remote Windoze box, you need Samba. If you run into problems, post 'em. Samba is real easy.

Keefresh2, Ubuntu is basically Debian with a really slick UI and is mostly designed for beginners. Mandriva is an RPM based distro more like Redhat, SuSE, etc.

Ubuntu 6.06 will be fine for a while. I'm jumping to 6.10 in a couple of weeks. Most of the annoying bugs are fixed, but I just don't have the time right now and I know i'm going to break my Xgl/Compiz.

===================================================

ALL Ubuntu users need EasyUbuntu. I promise, you want that. It's beautiful.

The easiest way is to update your sources and install through apt-get (or synaptic if you like). It's super easy, as in the name?

open a terminal, then type:
wget http://easyubuntu.cafuego.net/969F3F57.gpg -O - | sudo apt-key add -

Edit your sources:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add this at the bottom of the /etc/apt/sources.list file:
deb http://easyubuntu.cafuego.net main easyubuntu

Update your sources:
sudo apt-get update
(or you can use Synaptic)

Install EasyUbuntu:
sudo apt-get install easyubuntu

Now you have EasyUbuntu installed!

Configure it:
Go to Applications --> System Tools --> EasyUbuntu

You shouldn't have to, but you might want to reboot.

now gimme a happy dance :ezbill:

Have I mentioned how much I like the new editor window on this site???

eau-yeah munch on this
: GPG error: http://packages.freecontrib.org dapper Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available

The freecontrib path changed. Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file.
Find the 2 entries with freecontrib.org and change to:

deb http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf dapper free non-free
deb-src http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf dapper free non-free

Add the GPG key --
type:
wget http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/12B83718.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Update Sources --
type:
sudo apt-get update

see if that fixes it.

To upgrade (not update) to 6.10:
Type:
sudo update-manager -c

(the -c will tell it to go find a major system upgrade)

Too late I just found the wiki like about an hour ago :ezbill: See I am catching on slowly but surely

I was able to mount the ntfs drive and it worked great. I can now play my files without copying them to the ubuntu system. I also installed wine, and then winamp, just for the heck of it, but I don't really need it. Just wanted to see if I could do it.

I d/l'ed the 6.10 AMD64 cd but haven't tried to install yet. I was reading about some bugs and it mentioned some problems with the ATI driver locking up systems. Sounds like the same problems I had with Suse. I'll wait until I see they have that fixed, although the problems seem like they come from ATI's newer drivers. Nvidia doesn't seem to have as many problems.

I ended up using automatix instead of easyubuntu. I guess there isn't much difference and they accomplish the same thing, which was getting the codecs installed for the mp3's and mpegs, and the other stuff.

So far I'm loving ubuntu. The only problem I'm having with it is having to type my password constantly since it won't let me log in as root. I'll get used to it.
Thanks for all the help.

Do cd and dvd burning apps work in the ubuntu environment?
How about bit torrent clients? If so, is port configuration easy to figure out?
Thanks
