Undefeated? Unlikely for the Saints (semi-long read) (1 Viewer)

As long as they go 3-0 i'll be happy ...then we think about next week.

The Saints can go undefeated this year. However they are 8 other teams that also have a chance at going undefeated. Does this mean any of them will? Most likely not.

Some of the same people who make comments about Mock Drafts in 2010 (...which there's nothing wrong with that) have a double-standard of getting upset when a thread is started that takes a look at the big picture for THIS season.

I'm not singling anyone in particular out. But if the shoe fits, wear it. If a few of you would read my post again, you'll see that I wrote that the Saints going without a loss was possible, but unlikely. If you look at the statistics, and the dynamics of what it takes to make that happen (even when you have a great defense and offense), it's not an easy thing to do.

I'm like nearly every other Saints' fan: Let's take care of THIS week. In this case, it's the Buffalo Bills. We have to win the NEXT game, and take all of them one-game-at-a-time. OK... let's put a PERIOD right there.

But don't forget, this is a fan "discussion board." You're free to join in on a thread if it interests you, or ignore it if it doesn't. But to try and browbeat someone because they brought something up that you wouldn't necessarily do is, well... sorta rude.

I outlined my case in this thread. I don't expect everyone to agree. If the reasons outlined don't make sense, I welcome your point and/or counter-point.

Don't worry about all the replies... your not the only one thinking about the possibility of the team going undefeated. But, you have to expect to get a ton of "What?! Let's worry about this week." replies when posting about a team going undefeated after just two games though.

DWFC tribe now run Casinos. The medicine man for our tribe set the lines for most betting. DWFC go to him before start of season and ask about his plastic grass warriors' chance of going to Super Bowl and how many wins would they have. Medicine Man go into cleansing period (cost DWFC case of single malt scotch and new peace pipe) followed by his trance (induced by dancing and chanting). After countless peyote buttons and 3 days of drug induced stupor, medicine man emerge from teepee at one with Earth, espousing inner calm, and (according to him) know future.

Him state that our plastic grass warriors have chance of going without loss (so Crimson and Gold grad must go into drug induced stupor as well), but have 5 great obstacles in front of them.

The winged predator from the Georgia sky will try to get early leads in their reservation and ours with intent to force mistakes. Their young field warrior will need to be physically intimidated so that him create errors. Our warriors need to convert to our advantage. Saints intimidate field warrior, them win. If not, them lose.

Big cats from the hills can run. They have field warrior that is fighting for life. Field warrior have long record of beating Saints (thank you Jim Haslett). What makes field warrior more dangerous is his love to beat Saints and possibility of aging out of sport. Both games, in their home or Saints reservation will be battle. Ability to strike quick and take cats ability to run will dictate win.

Warriors that battle for tea always give 100%. Their hoody-wearing Chief is wise sport man and this battle will be won in preparation. Saints Chief will devise brilliant plan for offense and defense. Warriors execute gameplan and they will execute the competition. If not, look for rematch after new sun start Jan 1st.

Some of tribe will get hurt through course of season. Young warriors will be expected to fill in and carry load of older tribe. Some will make great name for self, others will not. Chief will need to find ways to mask weakness and exaggerate their strengths. Good thing that Chief is mighty medicine man and has other warriors believing in self and plans. Must have great peace pipe and something to go in it.

From Oct 25 - Jan 3rd there are battles that will occur out in the weather. These battles may find weather conditions not in best interest for Saints plastic grass attack themes. Finding new ways of defeating warriors from other cities will be critical. New Chief of Defense will be key element in finding ways to knock the other tribe the **** out.

So, medicine state that Saints could possibly go undefeated but they could also go 11-5. I tend to believe that they will be somewhere in the latter guess vicinity.

DWFC not post serious reply in while - left most of replies for drive by humor. Occaisionally though, DWFC must be serious as to help promote discussion. Having been fan of plastic grass warriors back to the days of Tulane Stadium and the $1.50 student ticket price, it is great to feel that this could actually be the year. DWFC would not bash anyone for feeling exuberant and hoping for the best. But DWFC will not accept anyone else bashing someone for feeling this way.

PS - ndcc, please get that baby in your avatar some laxative. He looks pretty clogged up - like maybe a Hubigs pie with a Walker-Roemer chocolate milk type of clog. That should give him a BM...74?:mwink:

Wow... some people need to stop looking ahead and start taking everything one game at a time. Going undefeated doesnt matter. Winning the NFC South and securing a first round bye does matter. I could careless if the Saints go 10-6, as long as they win the South and lock up a first round bye.

Win one game at a time, and then at the end look at the body of work. If the body of work is undefeated, awesome... if not, but they have a Superbowl win, still awesome.

I am a fan. I can look ahead if I want. What I do has no effect on the team at all.
But, I would just like to make the playoffs. I don't care if we drop a couple of games.

:_rofl: :hihi:

Very skillful analysis oh, great prognosticator. Winged fowl will be plucked throughout the season, bro!

I love my kid in the photo; avatar won't change! :nono:

You graduate from Brother Martin?

:gosaints:

Spent much time in early 70's at Breaux Mart....ah, Mr Levy was a true gem.....and Brother Nicholas (whistling s) - Never forget the time (name with held) fell asleep in class. We closed the blinds, changed the clock to 5, and closed the door. When the bell rang, he came flying out frantic. It was hysterical.

How dare you set reasonable expectations.

See http://www.saintsreport.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122904 for the chances of various playoff success and average final records by teams with undefeated or losing streaks to start the season.

Notice that the average finish is pretty much .500 to .500 + a game after the winning streak ends for teams that start strong (this includes the really long streaks). Remember too that the Saints two best unbeaten starts were for 5-0 and 7-0, and that for 5-0 we finished out of the playoffs (one of 2 teams to do so, and two 6-0 teams have fouled it up), and we limped to the division win and no bye for 7-0. A better 3-0 team in 2006 got a bye in a year where the NFC beat up on each other. I have a feeling even if we don't stay on a streak that we have a good chance to outdo that past, but nothing at all is remotely in the bag after 2 games. Our statistical expectation should we beat Buffalo tomorrow is a coin toss between 9 and 10 wins, and we can do better or worse, but nothing is locked in. It's fun to get excited (and I am), but we should be realistic too about how much is left to go, and how relatively difficult our last half is expected to be compared to our starting opponents (of course by the time we get to the last half of the season the teams that we thought were good may be toast). Let's enjoy what we have without ruining the rest with expectations that haven't been earned. A healthy one out of six 4-0 teams misses the playoffs, so let's enjoy the run and root for the next few wins at least before we go nuts.
