Impossible to ignore injuries as Saints cling to life after big loss to Falcons

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

Nobody wants to hear excuses.

The standings aren’t going to pardon the Saints for losing their third game just because they were without more than half of their projected starters on defense. New Orleans lost to the Atlanta Falcons 45-32, are now 0-3, and will need a major rebirth to save the season.

"No, it's next man up," linebacker Craig Robertson said. "You'll hear that all over the NFL because you can't change what you do week in and week out from injuries. It's always next man up."

The Saints aren’t going to make excuses. That’s not what football teams do. It’s a next-man-up world, and the ability to fill in and overcome adversity is typically what separates winning teams from losing teams. But it’s impossible to tell the story of this game without noting who wasn’t on the field, and it has to be pointed out that, at least at cornerback, the seventh man is up and on the field at this point.

Maybe the best way to put the game into perspective is to note Atlanta put 35 points on the board before wide receiver Julio Jones even made a catch. It was that kind of night.

Impossible to ignore that the defense and ST have been a dumpster fire for 3 seasons with no measurable improvement, injuries or no injuries.

our 2nd and 3rd string players exhibit the same problems we've seen from our starters for years. nobody can tackle or stop the run. no ball hawks in the secondary. injuries would be a valid excuse if these problems weren't present for payton's entire tenure aside from one season where we created some turnovers.

We keep the same position coaches and the issues stay the same... for years. Mind boggling.

Also, not just RAC yards on the secondary, but complete inability of the front 7 to even touch the ball carrier until 10+ yards up the field on several runs.

I refuse to put that on the patchwork secondary. It's bigger and deeper.

Falcons running game had 7 YPC!

I hate to break it to Underhill but the Saints season flatlined the second Harris ran into Lewis. The most shocking thing to me is how mentally fragile this team is. One thing goes wrong and they just shut down.

You expect 2nd and 3rd string players (and some of these guys on defense are 6th and 7th string players) to be ball hawks and great tacklers?
