Saints film review: Is New Orleans starting to put together a consistent pass rush?

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

It looks like the New Orleans Saints defense might have figured out how to generate consistent pressure.

Two weeks might not be enough to declare this a trend, meaning it’s possible we look back on this stretch as an outlier. But it’s also possible this is the next step toward a turnaround for the defense.

The Saints lost 23-20 to the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, but it would be difficult to place much, if any, of the blame on the defense. New Orleans only allowed 223 yards — an average of 3.6 per play — and created pressure on nearly half of Carolina quarterback Cam Newton’s pass attempts.

This loss, much like the week before against the Denver Broncos, was the result of turnovers and special teams miscues. For the defense, this was — save for one poor half against the San Francisco 49ers — the group’s fifth strong performance in a row.

The most interesting thing about the past two performances: New Orleans has managed to start getting after the quarterback. The easiest elements to identify for the improvement are the returns of rookie defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe from injury, but it goes deeper than that.

Saints defense has been awesome the last 2 games but it's a little too late now pending a dang miracle.
To bad the offense stalls out and special teams turns into hot garbage when the D finally steps up.

Making the pickups of Fairley, Rankins, and Onyemata look really good. I like it.

We've turned the corner, gentlemen.

Seems like there's always something haunting this team, The Griod St. end zone hasn't been brought up in awhile.

They will probably try to wait and suspend Vacarro when we most need him. Probably this year if we make a run, or next year if we don't make the run this season. Thought I'd just put that out there. We are starting to look very good and exciting to watch though.

This is what I fear the most, sadly you are 100% correct.

Onyemata was impressive on that goal line play where he got the running back and literally stood him up and shoved him back along with a couple lineman to save the TD on that play. The force and leverage he showed on that play was sweet to see.

It was great. Granted, he was pushed back pretty badly on another goal line play, but the talent is certainly there. Just needs to develop some better consistency, and he could be a real force on the line.

Good read. I know it's only a couple of games but the last few weeks our defense has looked really good. Ellerbe is such a good player. I hope he can stay healthy the rest of the season. He's making plays all over the field.

Ugh!! Sundays without Saints' football...

Yeah we definitely see the youth at times on the defense. But with what they have done the last few weeks is impressive when you think they are still playing a makeshift CB unit, however, Crawley I'm really beginning to like. If somehow they can manage to have Breaux, Williams, Swann, and Crawley all healthy next year, dang.

Crawley looked great to me. Super excited to see if he can continue that momentum.
