Saints offense opens up a diversified attack in win over Panthers

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

There were times during the first four weeks when it looked like the Saints offense was going through some things.

The ball wasn’t moving like it usually does against the New York Giants, and the San Diego game also featured some moments where things didn’t quite look right. But the performance during Sunday’s 41-38 win over the Panthers was a strong reminder of how explosive the Saints can be.

There were a lot of reasons the offense hummed from start to finish. Carolina having two inexperienced cornerbacks on the field is a big reason. The fact that Drew Brees was locked in and connecting on 34 of 49 passes for 465 yards with four touchdowns is another. And getting Josh Hill back after suffering an injury in Week 1 helped the team do some things it hadn’t been able to do with formations.

The tight end’s fourth-quarter touchdown aside, his simple presence helped open things up for the rest of the offense. Instead of being locked into their three-receiver personnel, which was the case for much of the first four games, the Saints were able to mix things up and better disguise what it was doing and could better dictate some coverages.
