Underhill thinks Carr will be Saints starter [mod edit: Moore-Carr meeting went well; Saints plan is to keep Carr in 2025 & figure out contract] (92 Viewers)

I just think it is wishful thinking that Carr is taking a pay cut. I would certainly love that. However, everything is signaling restructure since we are going to be “active” in free agency. Cap room has to come from somewhere. Which means it would be even harder to cut him next year. It appears Carr is the longer term solution than what we expect.
Big misconception. He has a clear out in 2026 even after a restructure.

I'm talking about the fact that Nick said they still needed to work out some financial details. That could mean a pay cut for Carr. Why are you so committed to Carr not taking a pay cut?

People say sheet all the time that they go back on. In negotiations people always say I won't take a penny less that X and then in a few days they take many pennies lower than X. Nobody even asked him about a pay cut. He volunteered the information. That sounds a lot like a negotiation strategy to limit the amount of pay cut you will accept if you hear the right things.
I seriously doubt Carr will take a pay cut regardless of the financial details they're going to work out. He has no motive to do so if he knows the team won't cut him. Carr's agent did nasty things to Loomis in the original contract negotiations and knew this is what it would come to in the 3rd year. They are practically daring the team to cut him or pay him $40m this year and at this point it looks like Carr is getting his $40m. I'll bet all agents study that contract to make sure their guy is going to have a massive dead cap hit when the most expensive years come because they know the team will just pay their player and kick the can.

A lot of people are focusing on Kellen's comments about Carr's contract. Seems like there are a lot of mental gymnastics taking place to cut Carr's pay. Not happening. Carr will have to be restructured. It's what the Saints do. We've seen it a hundred times. We'll kick the can, again.

Big misconception. He has an out in 2026 even after a restructure.
There is no out next year unless they don't restructure him, but that's pretty close to impossible. If they do a full restructure his cap hit is $69m to keep and $60m to cut in 2026. Even with a June 1 cut they'd have to carry that $60m until June. Looks like what they'll have to do is keep Carr in 2026 and eat his $40m of void year money in 2027.

It's been a matter of moving on from him THIS year or NEXT year. It'll be intriguing indeed to see how Moore fashions the offense with an experienced vet as the starter. Yes, he's a career second-tier-at-best vet, but still experienced none the same.

Logically, they'll need to address the o-line yet again this offseason, either in FA or the draft. Guard, specifically.

Giv him a Big X, Jeanty with AK, a decent TE option and solidify the O-line and the O goes from meh to very good.

You can save 10mil cutting him next year after a full restructure this year. That is an out. They'll be hard pressed to pay him 50 mil in salary. Only way he stays in 2026 is if he inks a new contract.

My biggest fear is finishing middle of a pack and missing out on a top QB next year. He’s not bad enough to the point we will only win 2 games or not good enough to where I say we are winning 10 lol.

Why does nobody fear losing the locker room by tanking and never being able to recover, and we're back to the Aints of old?

THAT'S my biggest fear. Getting a top pick only guarantees that You blow. Sure, you have teams like the Commanders that made it to the playoffs. But more often than not, you keep sucking.

It has been said that these contract talks will go beyond just simple restructure talks. What are your thoughts on what that means?

Taking a $60m dead money cap hit next year to cut him isn't an out. That's more dead money for a single player than any team has in total right now. The top 2 teams in dead cap right now have $50m but that is for 7 & 8 players respectively. On top of that, we have $57m in dead money in 2026 from void years of other players. That's $117m in dead money. It breaks the record by $32m.

Oh well. My preference was to turn the page on Carr, but Loomis and Moore feel differently.

I hope they are correct/successful because I want only good things for the Saints and Saints fans.

I will say that if they kick the can on Carr’s cap hit and don’t win, it will be a terrible look for Loomis and will use up most of the goodwill Moore has as a new HC with a limited roster.

I guess we’ll finally see if Carr’s reputation as a serial coach-killer is deserved or not.

I just dug through Carr's career wins. Only 23 of Carr’s 77 wins are against teams that finished with better than .500 records. 169 career total starts, 23 wins against teams with winning records. I'm sure it wasn't his fault though, so let give him another $30m this year.

Did you also look at the defenses that he played with all those years?
