Underhill thinks Carr will be Saints starter [mod edit: Moore-Carr meeting went well; Saints plan is to keep Carr in 2025 & figure out contract] (93 Viewers)

Did you also look at the defenses that he played with all those years?
Nope. None of that matters in their eyes. To them, team win-loss success is all on the quarterback, even after watching the great Drew Brees put up an inexplicable number of 7-9/8-8 type seasons.

They can’t fathom the idea that the reason Carr remains a starting QB and is highly spoken about by coach types is because people far more educated on football than them actually watch game film and practice and have a more nuanced view of the player and his performances.

Taking a $60m dead money cap hit next year to cut him isn't an out. That's more dead money for a single player than any team has in total right now. The top 2 teams in dead cap right now have $50m but that is for 7 & 8 players respectively. On top of that, we have $57m in dead money in 2026 from void years of other players. That's $117m in dead money. It breaks the record by $32m.
Once again I'm telling you what will happen. You can fight on your own self-made schematics or not. Just remember what I'm telling you.

He came to New Orleans and ate at Chipotle. It doesn't matter what he does. :)

He has a “difficult” cap number and the team literally just indicated that they’re working on contract stuff with him.

Why are you so hung up on semantics and things and getting seemingly upset about petty word usage or the prospects of a guy possibly :::gasp::: changing his mind? Is this how you normally react to not getting something you want?
Yeah a restructure aka further kicking the can down the road.

Taking someone at their word is not arguing semantics. Do players change their mind? Yes, but more often than not they’re truthful, is that so hard to grasp :::gasp::::

Fans need to be a little more realistic and less blind loyalty. Organizations do make mistakes and everything they do isn’t a good move and it’s ok to point that out. It’s 2025 and we have a brand new head coach when we had a brand new head coach in 2023.

And also you can chill out with the not getting what I want BS. I said it in this thread today and several other threads the past couple of weeks that strictly from a cap perspective it’s better to keep him this year and cut him in 2026. But when someone says oh let’s hold out 10% hope that he’ll do this one thing he emphatically said he’s not going to do, sorry but I have a right to say hey that’s a little silly huh.

Why does nobody fear losing the locker room by tanking and never being able to recover, and we're back to the Aints of old?

THAT'S my biggest fear. Getting a top pick only guarantees that You blow. Sure, you have teams like the Commanders that made it to the playoffs. But more often than not, you keep sucking.
I’d fear to lose the locker room more by constantly missing playoffs year after year. I’d rather strike out swinging than go down looking.

I was going to use the Texans as my example personally. Yeah picking high doesn’t guarantee you hit, but chances are much higher than hitting in the mid to later rounds on one. Idk if you have realized it but the Saints have never developed a QB from scratch since I’ve been alive and I’d like to see it before I die lol.

Probably because like only 10 players would stay in a rebuild. Roster turnover is actually pretty common for bad teams.

We are essentially doing what the Broncos did. They didn't purge the team the first year they had an aging not great roster with a new coach. They did that in the 2nd year for the new coah.

Much like the Broncos, we are going to keep our expensive aging vet QB along with our older players for one year, and then next year we cut the aging vet QB and let go of the older players. The Broncos improved last year despite spending very little in free agency because they hit on a QB and other young players.

Again, I would have done it this year, but I think the plan is to pretty much so do what the Broncos have done over a two year period.
Agreed. I believe this is exactly what we’re doing, too. Carr is literally our version of Russell Wilson. Let it play out & see where we’re drafting in 26. Carr will do what he’s done every single year of his career & that’s keystone cop his teams to a .500 or so season. But, after a year of that dookie show, we can dump Carr & start our search for our future QB1.

What’s more, is 26 & 27 look like they’ll be loaded w/super athletes at the position. True modern day NFL QB1s will be on deck. Im pretty sure this fact isnt lost on the Saints & they know who’s going to be coming out in the next few drafts.

All this stuff just sounds like things youre supposed to say going into a new season w/a new regime. It is like Sean Payton did year 1 in Denver. Play nice & play the hand your dealt, but if/when the it goes off the rails, it’ll be easier to move on & forward from Cart & allow Moore to find his QB1, a la Nix w/Payton.

What if restructuring could mean making the contract more incentive-based (which shouldn’t bother Carr if he’s confident in himself) and removes the no-trade clause to set up a true Carr vs. Rattler that could allow us to trade Carr should Rattler win. If Carr is confident, he shouldn’t be worried. Point being, we have no idea what another restructure could/would mean? Are we sure it HAS to mean kicking the can down the road, or could it mean setting things up to give Carr and Moore the chance to see how well they can work together or make it easier (and hopefully less painful) to let Carr try somewhere else?

Did the Broncos restructure Wilson in Payton’s 1st year?
