Underhill thinks Carr will be Saints starter [mod edit: Moore-Carr meeting went well; Saints plan is to keep Carr in 2025 & figure out contract] (127 Viewers)

They could take his salary and break it down into 15 million this season and 15 million next season but guarantee it while having a voided contract. That would give Carr his entire salary while giving cap relief, and still make it more attractive for a team to trade for him as he would have a reduced cap hit this season for receiving team (15 million), and only carry a 15 million dead cap hit next season or they could rework his deal if they keep him.

It would be a win win for Saints and Carr IMO, while dropping his 61 million cap hit next season to somewhere around 38 million (all dead money), and he becomes a FA next offseason. Not ideal scenario, but not the worst.
I think they are going void restructure $25-$27 million into the void years in 2027 and 2028 while dodging 2026 altogether.

We are essentially paying a player for cap space that won't be here. It's such a wild tactic to process. Just seems better off to pay him off to bring base salary to vet minimum and cut him. Why pay someone $30 million to not be here in 2026?

It appears that Loomis is still calling all the shots on personnel. Another wasted season coming.
What do you consider a wasted season? Because it sounds like many in this thread are calling for a "wasted season" to be more aggressive about clearing the cap sooner. Do we want to try to win or not try to win? And which direction is a wasted season. This is confusing.

Or is this just more general Loomis bashing?

i don't understand the cap implications, so I rely on the fellas on SR.com to break it down, and I follow the arguments like a tennis match. Not sure how realistic it may be, but if Carr is on the team in 2025, I'd like to see DC4 renegotiate his salary (pay cut) in an amount that offsets the signing of 2 new quality HOSS guards to park on each side of McCoy, for his own protection.

Don't be that guy who says to anyone 'your opinion is not valid because you are not in the room where Loomis works.'
I'm not "that guy," but I'll be whoever and however I want to be. I'm the guy who knows the difference between what I know and what I believe, and I place a higher value on what I know than what I believe.

We all analyze, speculate, and debate with strong emotion...
I occasionally have, at the most, a mild emotional response to discussions here. I guess that's why it surprises me when people have strong emotional reactions in a post. It's just differing ideas, opinions and preferences as far as I'm concerned. I don't take any of it personally.

Personally, with 3 former NFL QBs on the coaching staff, I think they have a higher opinion of Carr than anybody else, and that they plan on sticking with Carr beyond 2025. I think they will keep looking for a young QB to develop, but that it won't be the priority that most Saints fans want it to be.

He won't take a paycut.

Carr already has void years tacked on to his contract. He already has a dead cap in 2026 at 28.6 million.

Now... A simple restructure would dump a bunch of dead money into 2026. Which it seems like they don't want to do.

Nick and Triplet implied that this won't be a simple restructure. Carr has been quoted to the refusal of pay cut.

So, there only other viable option is another void extension and spread that cap hit outside of 2026.

It's a lot of work and it wouldn't stop Carr from demanding a trade at any given point this off-season after getting his lump sum check.

Still think the best option is barter with Carr to get him to take a paycut and cut him immediately while getting cap relief.

Your criteria for a former NFL quarterback are quite low. They are former NFL quarterbacks just like Payton, nothing memorable or elite. I know some folks like to play the coaches know better than you game, but this guy has been in the league for 11 years; he's not elite. On his best day, he's on par with Kirk, and everything has to be working well for him to look good.
Mick is engaged in some very illogical decision-making, and I'm beginning to think Moore might be another Loomis pawn.

I don't think this year has true franchise QB. Ward IMO has the best chance to turn into one and Sanders could end up developing into a top ten to top 15 guy just outside of the franchise level. (Much like Carr) Outside of those two, there are boom or bust types that seem more likely to bust like Millroe and Dart. IMO, you should always be taking lottery tickets on QBs in the draft because you never know when you get lucky and hit on one.

Also, you never know when a guy is going to take a big leap in one year in college and turn into an elite prospect so there could be one in the draft next year even though I think Manning does not enter the draft until he graduates. Guys like Burrow, Daniels, and Nix sometimes develop in their last year to become elite prospect in the draft out of nowhere. So, you never know which year that happens. It didn't appear to happen this year but it could happen next year with Nuss, Jr., Drew Allar, or any number of other guys we aren't even thinking about right now.

Anyway, the Saints should not let keeping Carr this year stop them from drafting a QB in the draft this year if they see one they like and they are in position to draft him with good value.
Some people talking about Kyle Mcord, so i had a look at his highlights. He's a solid QB for sure. But we have this guy already in Rattler. Rattler makes every one of the throws Mccord makes in this video.

Can you explain how that works for us? I see that Jameis is on the cap this year, but I was under the impression you could only split the money between 2 years, the current and the following. I don't understand the mechanism that allows for us to have any of his cap space in 2028 whether he finishes out his contract or not.

This is where this team is operating with 0 vision or a plan.

If Carr is kept then it is universally agreed to that is only a 1 year thing but what is the point of keeping Carr just to win 3-4 more games than we would with Spencer Rattler and not put ourselves in position to go get a QB or just keep adding top talent to this team.

Loomis is so afraid to suffer the consequences of the position that he put the team in that it is going to force the Saints to go from bad to mediocre range for infinity. He just wants to figure out how we can be a 7-8 win team year after year and just keeps winging it to stay in that range.

Why would Loomis intentionally try to stay in the 7 to 8 win range every year?

Not sure he's trying to figure out a way to only win 7-8 games, but he doesn't seem to be paying any attention to what other teams that are contenders every year are doing. He has his method that doesn't work very well and he sticks to it. The good news is that he is the oldest GM in the league that isn't Jerry Jones and should be gone soon enough.

I'm trying to find a video on it and now I'm confused too.

I think Loomis and his team found a way to circumvent it with the June 1st Designation. I need to look up Winston contract situation.

Yep...the fact that Michael Thomas and Jameis Winston are still on our salary table shows that there are ways to pull from future dollars on players that have been long moved on from.

There are just so many creative ways to pull dollars from future cap years.

Void years, June 1 cuts, Unlikely to be Earned Incentives, etc....it's a 3 to 5-year outlook matrix and we only get to see the black and white front cover.

I wish they would stop doing that so much, but yeah, I was kind of wondering if they would do something like they did with Michael Thomas. I don't get exactly how it works but it could be an option if Carr will work with the team.
