You know, if you aren't going to read my posts, I'm not going to respond to any more of yours. I've reiterated my position over and over and over again. I said more than once that it wasn't just about race, but that it was also about gender. We certainly don't hear much about young boys who go missing or teenage boys who get murdered, do we? The focus on girls, in my view, plays off all our culturally-based instincts to protect women, to view women as vulnerable and helpless. Boys can take care of themselves, girls and women need to be protected, blah, blah, blah. Gender is implied here just like race is.

And you're right - most murders each year in this country don't end up on the news. So maybe it's a worthwhile exercise to ask what sorts of factors go into deciding which ones the media will obsess about for hours, days, weeks, or months on end.

Well, you are right that the female or child angle is more dramatic because they are more vulnerable. I'm sure that has a lot to do with driving ratings.

Would this have made national news if she weren't a pretty white girl? I mean, stuff like this is pretty awful, but I do ask myself if it's really national news. People get murdered every day, but we only hear about it nationally when the person is young, pretty, white, and female. Because that's what the media assumes we'll all identify with, i.e, that could be my daughter, that could be my sister. It's plays on our culturally-embedded sympathy for women or anyone else we deem to be helpless or more vulnerable. It's the same reason child abductions are all over the news (when the child is white, of course).

If a black girl in the inner city goes missing, how often is it on the national news? If two little Hispanic kids vanish from the bus stop in El Paso, does Fox put it on their site? Of course not. Missing white kids and missing pretty white chicks are national news - other missing and murdered people aren't. So annoying.quote

Well, then you read very selectively. Or else your own prejudices make you particularly sensitive to any hint that white people might get certain advantages in this country that other people don't generally get. I have nothing more to say to you.

Haha, to listen to some white people on this board talk about how persecuted they are, you'd never know it.

Well, I don't believe any race to be inherently more vulnerable than any other. Females and children on the other hand are, by their very nature/stature. Since older men dominate network news audience, they can be convinced to become more emotionally invested in a story if the reporter can trigger the viewer's protector instincts.

here is the rest of the story........
the reason why this was on national news had nothing to do with race of anyone like suggested by some.
the bad was a suspect in several aggraveted crimes however there was very little evidence to say it was the same person. well when he finally killed someone it goes off the chain.
there was one incident where this piece of work approached a mother walking out of SAMS stuck gun to her 3 year old childs head and demanded her money or he would kill her child.....
that is why this was such a news worthy case.
