I got this from a friend on email...it looked flaky -- there is a similar plea on snopes, but not this exact one.

Not only does this plan make sense, but I’ve added more info on Oil Companies at the bottom of this email. Exxon and Mobil are only two of the major oil companies that purchase some of their oil from the Middle East. It wouldn’t hurt to quit buying from any oil company that buys oil from OPEC. The list of companies that buy ZERO barrels from OPEC are at the bottom of this email. Conoco might be a choice since it is American owned and only does business in Saudi Arabia as a partner with Phillips in the chemicals industry and in Quatar as a partner with Phillips in natural gas production.

Subject: Fw: Gas Prices

THIS IS NOT THE 'DON'T BUY' GAS FOR ONE DAY, BUT IT WILL SHOW YOU HOW WE CAN GET GAS BACK DOWN TO $1.30 PER GALLON.

This was sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. If you are tired of the gas prices going up AND they will continue to rise this summer, take time to read this please.

XXXXXXXXX offered this good idea. This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! It's worth your consideration. Join the resistance!!!!

I hear we are going to hit close to $ 4.00 a gallon by next summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can Really work. Please read on and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $2.00 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $3.08 at Arco and Costco for regular unleaded in Salem, Oregon and climbing every week. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..not sellers.

With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers . If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted!

If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all! (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am . so trust me on this one.

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $2.00 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK.

IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE, LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING INFO:

Did you know we have a choice of buying American gasoline or from the Saudis? I thought this note worthwhile so I'm passing it along.

Are you aware that the Saudis are boycotting American products? In addition, they are gouging us on oil prices.

Shouldn't we return the favor?

Can't we take control of our own destiny and let these giant oil importers know who REALLY generates their profits, their livings? How about leaving American Dollars in America and reduce the import/export deficit?

An appealing remedy might be to boycott their GAS. Every time you fill up your car you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia. Just purchase gas from companies that don't import ANY of their oil from the Saudis.
Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill up my tank, I'm sending my money to people who want me, my family and my friends dead. The following gas companies import Middle Eastern oil:

Shell..................................... 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco................... 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil....................... 130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway.......... 117,740,000 barrels
Amoco................................. 62,231,000 barrels

And CITGO oil is imported from Venezuela who’s Dictator Hugo Chavez hates America and openly avows our economic destruction! (We pay Chavez's regime nearly $10 Billion per year in oil revenues!)

The U.S. Currently imports 5,517,000 barrels of crude oil per day from OPEC. If you do the math at $100 per barrel, that's over $550 million PER DAY ($200 BILLION per year!) handed over to OPEC, many of whose members are our confirmed enemies!!!!! It won't stop here - oil prices could go to $200 a barrel or higher if we keep buying their product.

Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:
Sunoco.........................0 barrels
Conoco.........................0 barrels
Sinclair.........................0 barrels
BP/Phillips...................0 barrels
Hess.............................0 barrels
ARC0............................0 barrels
Maverick......................0 barrels
Flying J.........................0 barrels
Valero..........................0 barrels
Murphy Oil USA *.........0 barrels
*Sold at Wal-Mart. Some of its gas is from South Arkansas and fully USA owned and produced. Not only that but they give scholarships to all children in their town who finish high school and are legal US citizens.

Murphy Oil Corporation

Murphy Oil Corporation is an international oil and gas company that conducts business through various operating subsidiaries. The Company produces oil and natural gas in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Malaysia and conducts exploration activities worldwide. The Company owns refining and marketing operations in the United States and the United Kingdom. Murphy USA Marketing Co. (Murphy Oil USA, Inc.) operates retail gasoline stations under the Murphy USA® brand across 20 states in the U.S. These are high-volume, low-cost retail gasoline stations, primarily in the parking areas of Wal-Mart Supercenters. Murphy Oil USA, Inc. also operates a network of 12 Company-owned terminals. These terminals, along with numerous third-party terminals, provide fuel supply to retail and branded wholesale stations throughout 23 states.

All of this information is available from the U.S. Department of Energy and each company is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing.

But to have a real impact, we need to reach literally millions of gas buyers. With the help of the Internet, it's really simple to do. Now, don't wimp out at this point....Keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I'm sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at only ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it...THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE-the entire population of the United States of America !!!!

Again, all you have to do is forward this message to 10 people. How long would that really take you? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people, within one day all 300 MILLION people could theoretically be contacted during the next eight days.

Supply and Demand has absolutely nothing to do with the price of gas. It hasn't for many years now. We have TONS of oil on hand right now. Refiners are turning away oil because they have plenty.

Speculators are driving the market. Speculators that are nothing more than professional gamblers playing with other peoples money.

The price of oil will eventually crash when the bubble bursts. Then the Fed will do this quantitative easing horse manure again and we'll be screwed even more.

I will add that consumer consumption is a tiny percentage of oil consumption compared to commercial consumption, such as jet fuel, diesel for commercial transport and oil used for power generation. Not to mention that you can't determine whose gas a store is selling based on the brand on the sign. We learned that with BP.

It's ridiculous to think any consumer boycott would have ANY effect on oil/gas prices.

I can't believe that anyone really thinks this would work.

I'll make an analogy that lowers the scale, and shows why it won't work. Let's say you live in a small town, and you love corn. There are two farms in your town that sell corn, and they are run by Joe, and Bill. They supply enough corn for the entire town. One day, Bill does something that ticks everyone off, so everyone in town decides not to buy corn from Bill. Everyone rushes over to Joe's farm, and buys corn from him, thinking that it will force Bill to close up his farm.

But, what really happens? Joe sells out of corn in one day, so he calls Bill, and buys a bunch of corn from him. The next day, everyone shows up at Joe's farm, and buys all of his corn. Eventually, the price of corn goes up, because Joe now has the added expense of having to buy corn from Bill, and transport it to his farm.

The exact same thing would happen with the oil scenario. Let's say that it worked, and no one in America bought gas from Exxon or Mobil. Eventually, the other gas stations would run out of gas, and would have to get their gas from somewhere...and they'd look around to see who has some gas to sell them..and they'll find that Exxon and Mobil have a stockpile. So, you'll end up buying gas from Exxon and Mobil anyway.

Oh...and to make things more interesting...How exactly do you avoid buying gas from Exxon or Mobil? Do you simply not go to a station with an Exxon or Mobil sign? You need to realize that the sign on the gas station isn't always (or even often) an indicator of where the gas in the tanks there came from.

Your initial assessment of flakiness was correct. Whoever wrote it had no understanding of oil markets or how stations set prices.

Ignoring the futility of such a plan, most of the companies you mentioned do import or utilize OPEC oil. As others have noted, even if a company doesn't import OPEC oil they might still source gasoline from it. Evil Company A would simply sell product to Good Company B if email forwards had any impact.

The only true way to make a tiny difference is by consuming less no matter the day or retailer.

Does an independent gas station owner have the right to buy gas from anywhere? If they are an Exxon station, do they have to buy Exxon gas or can they call up the local Citgo supplier and buy from them?

Most gas stations either buy their gas from a local refinery or from a gas broker. The gas station owner has little (if any) asy in where the oil actually came from.

Any e-mail that has "Fw:" in the subject should be automatically looked at with skepticism, especially if they are trying to get you to do something or persuade you to take a stance on an issue.

Anyone who takes the content of a forwarded e-mail to post on a forum should be required to put "Fw:" in the topic of the thread just like the e-mail they copied it from.

Anyone who forwards on an e-mail that includes phrases such as "it really works, I got my check in the mail last week" or "trust me, i did it myself" should be arrested and not be allowed to access e-mail for a minimum of one year.

Exceptions can be made for e-mails that are solely intended to amuse you.

Seeing that Obama won't let them drill in the gulf where do you expect them to get the oil?

Oh, they're drilling... Millionaires are being made regularly in North Dakota.

Horizontal drilling/high prices made it profitable again.
