This helpful diagram should clear that up:Question for cricket fans here- the batsman - he can only hit the ball to the "off side " right?
i don't think so, but all offside means is that if i'm a righty, it would be the right hand side of the field, or left left side. leg side is generally where the ball is going to be hit.Pretty good explainer of cricket ( rules, play positions etc )

No…the batter has a 360 degree field that he can hit to. He checks the defensive layout and tries to find the gaps.Pretty good explainer of cricket ( rules, play positions etc )

Actually, the bowler (pitcher) sets his defense based on what type of bowl he’s going to attempt. A short bouncer, a slow ball, a Yorker, etc. will limit the batters options. They will also take into consideration the scouting of the batsman and what his favorite drives are based on the type of bowl. Also, the bowlers are usually classed as a fast bowler or a spin bowler. Completely different run ups and the way the ball reacts coming off the pitch. This also plays into the defensive field alignment.Ok so it's extremely important for the fielding team to set up their men per batsman.
Got it thx!
I was under the impression this was never done, at least not intentionally ...The worst bowl that a bowler can throw is a full toss…it doesn’t hit the ground before getting to the batter. These normally end up in the stands as a six run score.

Yep…a full toss is normally a mistake by the bowler. He may be trying for a Yorker…which bounces right at the batter, and overthrows a bit. Or they just release the ball a bit too early in their bowl and it goes higher and farther than desired.I was under the impression this was never done, at least not intentionally ...
It is somewhat odd coming from baseball, but the ball hitting the ground first makes it much more difficult for the batter to hit
