US ports longshoremen’s strike (East and Gulf coasts) (6 Viewers)

oh i dont doubt it for a second. We should have long moved to automation port side.

But- as you can see here, the reason we havent....a small group of unionized Americans are holding a large chunk of commerce and trade "hostage" to bleed as much money out the system before THEY retire. They arent worried about the next generation of dock workers- they know what is coming.

This is a power-play - coordinated at the precise moment that gives them as much leverage as they can garner ( ie public support by politicians running for office, public support for the "little guy" etc etc ). Gotta hand it to them, they could have done this 8 months ago. This was calculated.
As a dancer we always knew (bc we were always told) that there were dozens/hundreds waiting to take our spot
(Of course we had no union)
We wanted $10 more per day for rehearsals and to have our own hotel room if a tour lasted more than three days
Seemed beyond reasonable but director kept dithering
It was last day of rehearsal - tour started next day (no way they could replace us in time), and we said we’re not getting on the plane without these demands met
Director didn’t even meet us, just told company manager to say fine we agree just get on the plane

This sounds like extortion.

IT IS!!!!

Then he acting like HIS guys are being paid peanuts, many of them are pulling SIX FIGURES and they have an offer on the table for a 50% increase for all of them! There's a point where some union leaders gain so much power that it corrupts them and they go from negotiating in good faith during theses collective bargaining sessions to a straight up power grab...consequences be damned.

sounds like a whiny "you know what"

"oh we went to work during covid" wah, majority of ppl went to work during covid. it was 4 years ago and you got paid back then didnt you? you already got compensated for that. stop whining and get your arse to work like the rest of us.

They were probably screwed over severely during covid like most people in commercial shipping or the airline industry. What I find truly sad, is that workers of these industries have to strike to get compensated for their sacrifices. Most of these industries either boomed during or after COVID and/or received massive grants from the US government, yet employee compensation stayed at surpressed levels. I can promise you management of these industries had no trouble rewarding themselves for navigating the experience.

is 50% over the next 6 years, guaranteed, not "just compensation"? What makes them any different than any other employee required to work ( and sacrifice ) during COVID? Were they working for free?

Employee compensation surpressed? correct me if im wrong, but it sounds to me as though they, for the last 44 years, had been perfectly fine with "compensation levels" so what changed?

IIRC you are in the shipping industry- i read something yesterday, and maybe you can confirm what i read. I read that shipping costs to ship a container from Germany to Texas

$1200 shipping cost

Unloading ( from Ship to cement ) $2000
Unlock fee- $200
bolt cutter rental fee $500
Forklift fee per pallet - $500

Is this accurate or simply a lie? or somewhere in between?

There used to be a labor movement in the US - but it’s been virtually nonexistent for decades.

they werent the only ones that were screwed if so. i know a few people that owned a small business (tattoo/hairdressing type) that couldnt work due to government saying it wasnt safe, couldnt get the stimulus money cause of them owning the small business, as well as having to still pay rent on their studios but having no income.

you know what happened after government got off their high horse and opened the select business types they picked on? all those people went back to work busting their arse making up as much money as they could. the tattoo guy i know had to eventually close due to the struggle after, the hair dresser has been rolling since.

i worked the whole time, majority (not all, but most) ppl worked during covid. i dont feel sorry for ppl using that as a crutch 4 years later if they had the ability to work during. get back to work.

Getting death threats at the hall 😂

Pathetic boot lickers just itching to show the master what a good slave they are. 🙄

I couldn't tell you if the prices are correct or not. Add on charges are pretty commonplace in all sectors of the maritime industry. It's probably a lie, most container ports don't open containers. They move them from ship to truck, another ship, or truck then to distribution centers. Not sure exactly where customs gets involved.

Does he look like a guy who might have a RICO co-defendant show up dead in the trunk of a car in New Jersey?

Because he had a RICO codefendant show up dead in the trunk of a car in New Jersey.

Not the best messenger for labor.

his very first statement flies directly into contradiction with what his son said in April 2020.

Here is his son, Denis, in April of 2020- talking about not having the ability to pay "hazard pay" because the shipping industry/union is losing $$$.

and i wonder if this fight didnt start here....
