US ports longshoremen’s strike (East and Gulf coasts) (1 Viewer)

No
Not only do I disagree, I rebuke the assertion

Rebuke away. But humans are self-interested creatures that are seldom capable of overcoming that to do anything to benefit others other than in the event that it benefits them too. Why do you think corporations do evil things? It's because they are made up of people with the sole purpose of benefiting themselves. Altruism is an illusion.

Dumb question,

Can the Ports replace the strikers to keep business moving again? Sort of like what the NFL did in 1987?

yes.
but it's a dangerous job (crossing the picket line).
you usually have to sleep on site for weeks at time. and when it's over you'll never be able to work on the docks again. but there are always 'scabs' during a strike..

No - we would have never survived as a species if we were selfish
That ‘evil’ is a learned/socialized response stemming from the many factors that went into play allowing us to horde resources

robots are taking over fast food jobs too
Should they give back money to keep their jobs?
Would horseshoe makers have kept their jobs if they weren’t so darn overpaid?
Obsolescence is a different problem. Your example is more like newspapers not being able to survive Craigslist no matter how much they dropped their ad rates.

But we will still need to load and unload ships, it’s just a matter of how it’s done. And as the cost of capital (automation/robots/AI) falls while the cost of human labor rises, you will get more automation/robots. That’s just basic economics.

It highlights the shortcomings of labor unions and free trade all in one punch.

Chimp Empire is an interesting look into the primate genus.

Also, survival is selfish at it's base.

Selfishness is an evolutionary advantage that has survived because it is the most fit for this world. We joined into groups for selfish reasons, to help ourselves survive, not to help others survive.

Need to read the rat utopia experiment.

This is just moving the goalposts to have ‘selfishness’ be defined as ‘that which helped us survive’

I see people calculating dockworker's pay based on 40+ hours.

They're on a seniority list. They get a phone call after 4pm the night before to find out if they are needed to work. No call= no work. Low seniority guys have to show up and hope that a higher seniority guy doesn't show up or if more are needed. Maybe they get picked up, maybe they wasted a day waiting.

Here in the Great Lakes district the guys are seasonal. They save those "Great" paychecks because shipping shuts down due to the threat of the St. Lawrence seaway freezing. They go four months with no work. Indiana fights unemployment for seasonal workers. To qualify for insurance, pay increases, pension, off-season assistance, etc they have to meet an hours quota to qualify for the next year. first year = no benefits. They work seven days per week for eight months (the good months) to have benefits. The guys here don't do containers. They do break bulk work unloading an item at a time the old fashioned way. If no ships come in, they don't work.
