I'm just curious if anyone can give their opinions on Young. With the dire straights of our secondary last season, does anybody think he can step up and start? Or is he gonna be another wasted draft pick?

I'm not sure if he is quite ready to start now, but he may be I guess we will see in preseason. But I do expect him to eventually become a starter

It is not unusual for a CB to take a year or two to develop. Quite common, actually. Especially when the CB comes from a small school environment.

Can Young step up and start this season? Who knows. The coaching staff are the only ones who know his capabilities for now. I liked some of his play. Some I did not. He was typical of a rookie, IMO.

Time will tell if he is or is not an NFL caliber player.

It's odd how nobody talks about him when talking about our secondary for next year. Last year's draft is looking like the opposite of two years ago.

He will be a good nickle back and primary back up next year. I think he is still a year away form becoming a starter.

If Young was forced to start I think he would be alright by the end of the season.

I think Young has all the makings of working his way into the starting lineup. As much as I would love to see to him be a starter on day one of the 08' season, let's hope it doesn't happen. Here me out as to why:

1. I've watched him very closely over the last year and he has made great strides in improving himself to the NFL caliber. I believe he was a bit like a deer in the headlights with the jump to the NFL, which is typical for anyone coming into the league.

2. I believe with one more year of consistent play at the nickel spot, he can gain more confidence to start covering other team's #1/2 guy. Let's not forget that CB is a position of confidence, skill, and football knowledge. He came from a smaller school, so he needs more time to develop....but I think he's a quick learner and we'll witness it this coming year.

3. If he is eased into the position over time, he'll not take the risk of being labeled toast...i.e. David or Thomas.

4. I am REALLY hoping the front office can land a true threat through FA, so the pressure is off him to produce.

Number four is the key. I'm trying to be realistic and truly believe that he has a great off season, learns more about the system and what is expected of him. He knows he's got a great shot with the David, Thomas and Craft being who they are...to make an impact. I predict he works his tail off at camp and shows he can be the nickel and then in the 09' season is ready to push for the #2 spot.

His coverage skills are there and with an off season of hitting the weights, he will hopefully get a little more of a nasty streak in him. I'm pulling for this kid and think he is the one bright spot this secondary has.....especially since MM is currently hurt. That should give him the chance for LOTS of reps in the top or second spot in training camp and off season workouts.

Oh, let's not forget.....the Saints have some great WRs and a pretty darn good QB. What CB wouldn't love to practice everyday against some of the NFLs best???

i like him, he has the size and speed for the position. i think when they drafted him they were thinking of him as a replacement for mm. on our roster hes slated as mm's back up. he needs time to develop but he really did play well vs. the seahawks. i think he'll be fine if he puts in the work, who knows number 38 could see the field more in 08!

It's posts like this that I absolutely love to read, very well thought out & because I couldn't have said it better myself.. But I might also add, Usama does have a bit of a nasty streak, there were a couple times late in the season where I seen him get VERY physical comin' off the ball, kinda' like MM, he's definetly not one of those under 5'10 DB's.. if he were to lift and get bigger he'd be a damn safety, or a huuuuge corner.. he's gonna be good, given time.. But at the same time I couldn't agree more about bringin' in a top-level f/a DB (see Marcus Trufant when the f/a clock starts, pleeeeeeeeeease) especially with MM being in the condition that he's in .. I wish MM the best and all but he can't be rushed back, and the Saints badly need playmakers in the secondary, the sooner the better.

He can't be any worse than the starting RCB the last two years.

Perfect example is Corey Webster, drafted out of LSU in 2005. Has only recently become a decent option with improvement. He was previously picked on and a liability at times. Webster and Lofa Tatupu were available when we took Josh Bullocks in the 2nd that year................

Lol you beat me to it. My question was how long will it take for Jason David to be a starting caliber CB. I think Usama has better measurables than David and sure couldn't be any worse. Its a bad sign when you have a Rookie in the starting lineup and they still go after David.

Just because us fans forget about a player doesn't mean the staff has ;). Usama Young is a tremendous physical talent. Assuming proper coaching he's going to be a great player for us down the line.

I think he starts next year.

LCB: Young (MM Injured)
RCB: Craft ( or free agent pick up...or draft pick)
Nickle: David (or Craft or Fa pickup or draft pick)
Dime: Draft Pick (or FA pickup or David or Craft)

I think were gonna sign a corner and draft a corner (or two) and with an offseason I think Young comes prepared to push for a starting spot and with the talent already on the roster (Craft, David,) I think the competition isnt much for Young to beat.
