You mean like his baseball seasons now. It’s just crazy how some parents act at these games sometimes.
well he’s been playing FPPS but he wants a more competitive league now. His coach thinks he could handle it too
Don't be like those parents...
Basically, for an 8 year old, it's fairly simple. Just follow their lead on how much they want to get involved. At this point you're just nurturing their love of the game, of sport, and competition (but in a healthy way).
What to look for in a coach - they should be able to engage with that age group in an appropriate way. They also should be focused on just making the game fun. Developmentally, kids that age should be working on ball control skills. How to dribble, control the ball, etc... You want them to be very confident and competent on the ball. Don't worry about making them pass at this point (if they want to that's great, but don't be one of those people on the sideline yelling for 8 year olds to pass as soon as they get the ball). Their field presence will grow as they mature, and if they develop good ball skills now, they'll be able to make better passes and decisions later.
Oh, and be careful of the coaches who yell instructions from the sidelines. The game is the best teacher, you want them to learn from their mistakes and think on their own, not wait for the coach to tell them what to do all the time.
