I was wondering yalls opinion but IF he declares, would you guys draft him at #10? Assuming he falls and if we fill needs in FA.

I for one, would be thrilled if we drafted him. Our pass-rush was average this season, and this guy can rush the passer. He could be our nickle/pass-rush specialist for us. Also, remember that Will Smith only has 1 more year on his contract. You can never have too many pass-rushers.

Imagine the formation/blitz Gibbs uses (that has been successful), where he lines Smith as a stand up LB with Grant at DE or DT, but with Gholston as the other pass-rusher or stand up LB...talk about salivating.

Vernon Gholston is an absolute monster; he could play with his hand down or he'd make a good OLB in a 3-4. The Jets and Pats should be taking a long look at this guy. We, however, have more pressing needs this year.

No. You don't spend top 10 money on a part time pass rusher.

Look in the first video. That's not some no name freshman he powers over, that's Jake Long, who will probably be the no.2 or 3 pick in this draft, and is easily the best senior offensive lineman in College football.

I say take him if he's there. He is basically a stronger, faster Will Smith, but cheaper. We wouldn't need to resign Will and we'd be getting a better replacement for a lot less.

Sorry Zorro you must be a crazy Irishman to not want Will Smith back he has been a beast for us this year one of our performers (of which there hasnt been many)! Of course this opinion is coming from a crazy Scotsman lol!

I love Smith too, but if at the end of the year, we have to resign Will to a massive deal, we may not be able to afford it if we did get guys like Trufant or Briggs this offseason.
Will has not reached the same production as last year, but make no doubt about it I want him back here, but it I have a choice between:
Will Smith, who has not lived up to expectations since his pro bowl season, has put on a bit of weigh, and is slower

or

Vernon Gholston, an absolute clone of Will Smith when he was younger, only taller, slimmer, stronger, faster, and a lot cheaper, I would be all for Gholston. Gholston is 6'4, 258 pounds. Smith is 6'3, 282 pounds.Gholston also runs a 4.6, and I am not sure if this site is correct, but it says the lowest he has ran in the 40 is 4.5. That's quicker than Pierre Thomas, a RB!

Dont trust any of the numbers until the combine.

Plus I dont see the saints implementing the 3-4 any time soon, and he is more of a tweener on the field. So I would have to pass.

Yep this guy looks great but i think the reason Smith hasnt had a pro bowl type season is because he has had no help at all this year!! And as much as I hope we sign all these FA's available I.e the ones you mentioned the Saints never seem to sign these players so i wont be holding my breath

A nice read on Gholston and how's being compared to Will Smith:

"Whether I have 13 sacks or one sack, I try to play hard within the scheme of the defense and win games," said Gholston, whose 13 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss eclipse the numbers put up by Dorsey (six sacks, 11 TFLs). "You take pride in the defense. The guys in previous years have established that for us."

Gholston, the Big Ten's defensive lineman of the year, often finds himself compared to former All-America end Will Smith, now playing with the New Orleans Saints.

"I talk to him now and then," Gholston said. "He talks about when he played (at OSU) and the things he went through. He gives me some wisdom on those things. He watches the games. I'll get a text message from him saying, 'Good job.' "

We'd have 3 high-priced DEs... if you move Grant inside then I'd say go for it (which is what I recommended weeks ago)...

That's another option. I noticed during the Bears game how much bigger Charles seemed from last season.
Couple that with our injuries, and the aging of our players at the DT position, means that if Gholston is there moving Charles inside seems likely.
Gholston was also recruited as an OLB so we could, if we got him in shape, play him there.

We picked up another young DE from Ohio St. recently, and if Smith and Gholston were in the mix our D-Line would be full of fast, strong players at the ends, and big guys like Charles Grant and Hollis Thomas piercing through the interior.

I think that if we did pull this off, and had Gholston and Smith coming from the outside, and Grant and Thomas coming from the inside, we would immediately see a difference in our effectiveness at getting to the QB, and putting pressure on.

If Gholston didn't declare for the draft though, he would probably be the top senior prospect next year, barring a horrible season. That is the smart thing to do for him.

Y'all make it sound like Gholston's a sure thing. Will Smith was a better prospect coming out of college and we would simply be playing revolving doors at DE. Smith is one of 2 physically impressive guys on our Defense and the other's a DE too. I agree we need a pass rusher at LB or at 3rd DE, but we need to select one of the back 7 in round one.

Sounds like he is a 3-4 kind of player and wouldn't fit well here. But thats just guessing.
