Very Early Final 53 take... (1 Viewer)

Williams is a pretty decent boundary. Hes gotten better as a nickel. So williams position versatility makes him a lock can bank on that. Kirkwood also has position flexibilty which is what u want bottom of the deph chart. He got servicable traits as a flanker slot and z. I would be suprised if hes not on the team but its not impossible . I really dont know enough about Webster to comment his game or skill set. I think Newhouse is ur back up Tackle over Ola, Im hoping something better presents itself in roster cuts at that spot.

I'd think that a pinch-startable back-up LT would be the least likely position to find on Black Saturday. I'll add that Sean Payton has shown in the past that he values experience and familiarity with our scheme over talent and ability when it comes to offensive linemen. I would be very surprised if we brought in a back-up OT after cuts are made. I also think that if SP felt we were in a bad place with our OL, that we'd be out shopping right now.

We will have some players that will be tough to cut come August 31st. I think it there are a few players that actually have some player for player trade value right now. If it's possible to trade for an OT, now would be the time to do it. Regardless, it seems our coaches are good with the guys we have already. Personally, I'm just praying for an OL that actually through a season relatively healthy for a change.

I like this team, especially when Rankins comes back. Our depth at DT is not great 'til that happens though. I think DT is our weakest spot. If this happens, we'll also be very young at WR. But Grayson seems to be a great little slot whom I like better than Carr, but Carr could replace Grayson.

Cut Grayson and add Cobb
Cut Arnold and add Deonte Harris

PJ makes the team, so does Kirky (unless he goes on IR)

I think P Rob may even be in jeopardy.

Some of our young players that are showing promise will wind up on the PS, and get poached by less talented teams. That's the price you pay for having a talented team.

Webster has an injury history. Lets see if he makes it through camp. Rooting for him but the history is the history.

I find when I do this exercise every year, my misses are with picking too many veterans to make the team week 1. With veterans salaries becoming guaranteed if they make initial 53 man roster, Saints cut bottom of the roster vets and often bring them back later on.

Veteran's I believe won't make 53 because of guaranteeing salaries are: Derby, Webster, Grissom, Horton, Sherels, Newhouse, & Rodgers. Some could and should be brought back later. Derby, Webster, & Newhouse I like to be brought back after week 1.

Other veteran's I believe will make opening day roster but could also be cut and brought back later: Sylvester Williams (tough with Onyemata suspension week 1), Ola, & Banjo.

Guy's I believe make initial 53 with veterans being cut: Kirkwood, Deonte Harris, Stallworth, Gray, Elliss, Hampton, Clapp, & Grayson (to be sent down to P.S. after week 1).

There will likely also be a player from another team to make Saints initial 53, whether via cut, claim, or trade. I think this will be a pass rush specialist.

*Only keeping 3 RB b/c of Taysom and need for 4th TE for blocking. The last RB choice should be easy PS stash for later in season if needed. Alize Mack may be PUP/IR. Hill is an FA after this season so you have to think about his replacement.
**One of the younger WR will be IR'd. I think Grayson is on bubble but ST value keeps him there.
***Horton vet salary guaranteed Wk1, like Gustin's athleticism here
****I really don't care as much about the 5th CB given CGJ's versatility and Bell's to some degree. I think it comes down to salary and ST because ability may only be marginally better between Webster and Williams, and PJ gets the nod because of system/scheme familiarity.

Clapp is PS eligible still I believe.

that's a good way to look at it
to give completely arbitrary rankings
let's say the vet is a 7/10 and makes $5M - how low are you going to go to save $4M (assuming the rookes are at $1M for the sake of argument)
if the rookie is also a 7/10 if course you cut the vet
if 6/10, probably
if the rookie is 2 rankings lower (5/10), do you make the cut?
****
all that being said, the vets we're talking about are likely in the $1.5-2M range
Dan Arnold is making $570K
PJ $2,25M
Ginn $3.67M
Ola $805K

I think this roster is more likely....I have hope that Humphrey can find a spot on the 53, but at the same time I think Harris (PR/KR) is a player who was brought in and will thirive in his role and is a "vision player" as Payton would put it, he was thrown right in vs the Vikings and performed....he has an ability....a clear skillset.

I think Sherels (while being an established and successful PR) offers next to nothing as a DB. He also is a vet that would have his salary locked-in should he make the opening day roster... and he is past his prime.
Harris is younger, cheaper, and has potential to play on offense in special packages.

I think Crawley makes the team as a deep reserve boundary CB. PJ Williams and P-Rob are both terrible on the outside.

I could see Grayson becoming the new TLL, only with better speed.
