Video of PI call on 4th. Horrible call! (1 Viewer)

We can all agree to disagree but:

- was it PI? yes as the defender did not turn back to look for the ball and there was contact. This would be called all day. He can't just run towards the offensive player and initiate contact without making a play for the ball.

- should it have been called? I would hope not as the ball clearly was uncatchable, but Da Raiders could argue the player couldn't make an effort to catch the ball as he was impeded by the defender.

Face guarding is not a flag (so they say). Where was the contact? And at what point does the ball not being catchable come into play? The ball not being catchable means that the offensive player has no chance at it even if not impeded.

It's really a terrible call. Besides the contact being completely questionable, the ball was in no way catchable. A ref should err on not throwing the flag in a game changing situation like that. We should have won this game.

The Raiders need a new stadium. Losing teams don't get public financing for a stadium. Therefore the Raiders are going to win a lot this year to get the public behind the financing for the stadium.

Or maybe I just need to adjust my tinfoil hat

Bad call, and I knew it when it was called, but it doesn't change the fact that the defense failed to make one game changing play the whole game--no picks, no fumbles created or recovered, no sacks, no mojo.

Well we know the defense sucks, but it doesn't mean we deserved to lose. It's a team sport. We scored 34, and the defense allowed 27. Then the refs gave them a chance for 8 more.

I think there definaltey was contact and if the ball was thrown correctly it would have been PI. But the ball was uncatchable. Like really uncatchable. Carr complelty missed and overshot it by 5 yards. So the contact didn't matter.

That one is hard to take because we deserved to win the game right there. I don't blame the events that happened after that on that call, but it's happening too often around the league where teams lose a game because of human error on the part of the ref. They are getting these huge calls wrong so often for everyone and it needs to be fixed.

The worst part was having to listen to Del Rio's smug self after the game like he was the greatest coach of all time. You know you should have lost on that call. Be humble. Also, did anyone else catch his halftime interview where he said we're doing everything right but the officiating is terrible and that's why we're losing? That's a bad look.

Thank you

Thank you for posting this. It confirms what we already knew, but glad you took the time to capture it on your cell phone. Best view I've seen yet. :)

He doesn't have to turn around if he is not interfering. It's a hose call, like we get two or three every year. The ref won't get anything done to him.

It is sad that the officials can impact the final results of a game and that this horrible call, which it clearly was, could not be reviewed. There was a lot at stake for both teams and one team, our Saints, got the very short end of that stick!!!

Bad teams never get the calls to their favor. Until we gain respect by winning again it will be that way. We played the same way last year. Almost every game we would be ahead enough to win and D would always let us down. It looks like we find more ways to loose instead of ways to win.

...I agree, but with all that said the CORRECT call would of been to pick up the flag because the ball was uncatchable as it was to high and sailed out of bounds almost like a throw away and I think thats the point most on here are making because if it was reversed we all would of though the Raiders linebacker should of had a PI for not turning his head too but it would of been our luck that the call would of been made correctly and that flag would of been picked up for the reasons I stated above. (Uncatchable Pass)

I looked at the film very closely. There was contact before the ball got there (about 5 yards before the out of bounds marker), but it was clearly an uncatchable ball. A egregious bad call.

well maybe but the flag comes out after Robertson is already celebrating the win. The ball was already out so i would go to the ball being uncatchable so there can be no foul.

NFL Rules Digest: Pass Interference
Pass Interference

  1. There shall be no interference with a forward pass thrown from behind the line. The restriction for the passing team starts with the snap. The restriction on the defensive team starts when the ball leaves the passer’s hand. Both restrictions end when the ball is touched by anyone.
  2. The penalty for defensive pass interference is an automatic first down at the spot of the foul. If interference is in the end zone, it is first down for the offense on the defense’s 1-yard line. If previous spot was inside the defense’s 1-yard line, penalty is half the distance to the goal line.
  3. The penalty for offensive pass interference is 10 yards from the previous spot.
  4. It is pass interference by either team when any player movement beyond the line of scrimmage significantly hinders the progress of an eligible player of such player’s opportunity to catch the ball. Offensive pass interference rules apply from the time the ball is snapped until the ball is touched. Defensive pass interference rules apply from the time the ball is thrown until the ball is touched.

Actions that constitute defensive pass interference include but are not limited to:

    (a) Contact by a defender who is not playing the ball and such contact restricts the receiver’s opportunity to make the catch. Maybe on this one.

    (b) Playing through the back of a receiver in an attempt to make a play on the ball.

    (c) Grabbing a receiver’s arm(s) in such a manner that restricts his opportunity to catch a pass.

    (d) Extending an arm across the body of a receiver thus restricting his ability to catch a pass, regardless of whether the defender is playing the ball.

    (e) Cutting off the path of a receiver by making contact with him without playing the ball.

    (f) Hooking a receiver in an attempt to get to the ball in such a manner that it causes the receiver’s body to turn prior to the ball arriving.

Actions that do not constitute pass interference include but are not limited to:

    (a) Incidental contact by a defender’s hands, arms, or body when both players are competing for the ball, or neither player is looking for the ball. If there is any question whether contact is incidental, the ruling shall be no interference.

    (b) Inadvertent tangling of feet when both players are playing the ball or neither player is playing the ball.

    (c) Contact that would normally be considered pass interference, but the pass is clearly uncatchable by the involved players. THIS, 100X

    (d) Laying a hand on a receiver that does not restrict the receiver in an attempt to make a play on the ball.

    (e) Contact by a defender who has gained position on a receiver in an attempt to catch the ball.

Actions that constitute offensive pass interference include but are not limited to:

    (a) Blocking downfield by an offensive player prior to the ball being touched.

    (b) Initiating contact with a defender by shoving or pushing off thus creating a separation in an attempt to catch a pass.

    (c) Driving through a defender who has established a position on the field.

Actions that do not constitute offensive pass interference include but are not limited to:

    (a) Incidental contact by a receiver’s hands, arms, or body when both players are competing for the ball or neither player is looking for the ball.

    (b) Inadvertent touching of feet when both players are playing the ball or neither player is playing the ball.

    (c) Contact that would normally be considered pass interference, but the ball is clearly uncatchable by involved players.

Note 1: If there is any question whether player contact is incidental, the ruling should be no interference.

Note 2: Defensive players have as much right to the path of the ball as eligible offensive players.

Note 3: Pass interference for both teams ends when the pass is touched.

Note 4: There can be no pass interference at or behind the line of scrimmage, but defensive actions such as tackling a receiver can still result in a 5-yard penalty for defensive holding, if accepted.

Note 5: Whenever a team presents an apparent punting formation, defensive pass interference is not to be called for action on the end man on the line of scrimmage, or an eligible receiver behind the line of scrimmage who is aligned or in motion more than one yard outside the end man on the line. Defensive holding, such as tackling a receiver, still can be called and result in a 5-yard penalty and automatic first down from the previous spot, if accepted. Offensive pass interference rules still apply.

Bad teams never get the calls to their favor. Until we gain respect by winning again it will be that way. We played the same way last year. Almost every game we would be ahead enough to win and D would always let us down. It looks like we find more ways to loose instead of ways to win.

I don't recall last year being like that at all. I recall the defense being completely dismantled from the beginning of every game. And I recall the offense struggling to find a groove and protect Brees. This was notably different.
