(b) Was dependent on their stock prices.

XP was released in 2001. Vista was released in 2007.

You don't need it. I'm sure you can find a copy of Windows 3.1 somewhere and be quite happy with it. I'm willing to bet that most people would never upgrade unless the OS came with a new PC.

I got a laptop a couple of months ago with Vista and I hate it. Aesthetically, it's very nice but I got frequent IE lockups and random reboots among other problems. XP was a more solid effort. Hopefully Vista will mature into a more stable product.
