Before an excited Graveyard crowd that turned out to cheer them on for their home finale, The New Orleans VooDoo took advantage of two Austin turnovers and gave the fans something to cheer for on Father’s day as they defeated the Austin Wranglers 66-61 to break a seven-game losing streak.

New Orleans QB Steve Bellisari completed 26-of-43 passes for 294 yards and seven touchdowns, including four scores to WR Tryonne Jones to capture Offensive Player of the Game. Henry Taylor and Henry Bryant teamed up on back-to-back possessions to provide the VooDoo with points on defense, first a touchdown and then a safety.

New Orleans won the coin toss and deferred. On their first drive, Austin QB Lang Campbell found WR Otis Amey for a 27-yard touchdown, but K Mark Lewis missed the extra point. On the VooDoo’s first drive, QB Steve Bellisari found WR Wendall Williams for an eight-yard score, but K Jonathan Ruffin missed the extra point attempt, his first miss in 27 attempts in a VooDoo uniform. On their next drive, Campbell completed three passes, including the final two to former New Orleans Saint and Crescent City native Derrick Lewis, who scored a 10-yard touchdown to give Austin a 13-7 lead. The VooDoo offense responded on the next series as WR Kenny Henderson returned the kickoff 37 yards and then Bellisari completed two passes, culminating with a scoring pass to Tyronne Jones to tie the score at 13. The VooDoo defense held their own on the next drive as DB William “Roc” Haith intercepted a Campbell pass on the next drive, the VooDoo’s first interception since week 7 and his fourth of the season. However, the VooDoo would immediately lose the ball when they returned to offense when Bellisari fumbled the snap and Austin recovered. The Wranglers would capitalize as Campbell would find Lewis for a 19-yard touchdown pass to give Austin a 20-13 lead. Time expired in the first quarter following the kickoff return.

The VooDoo struck back quickly in the second quarter as Bellisari found Jones for a 32-yard touchdown on the second play of the second quarter, but Ruffin missed the kick, giving the VooDoo a one-point deficit. Points would come quickly again for New Orleans though on Austin’s drive, when DL Henry Taylor sacked Campbell and forced a fumble. The ball went into the end zone and LB Henry Bryant recovered it for a touchdown against his former team to give New Orleans a 26-20 lead. When Austin got the ball back the pressure from the two Henrys wouldn’t end as Taylor and Bryant sacked Campbell in the end zone to give New Orleans a 28-20 lead with the safety. New Orleans then responded on a five-play drive, culminating with Bellisari hitting Jones for a three-yard touchdown to give the VooDoo a two touchdown lead. Campbell found Austin WR Kevin Nickerson for the score on the next drive to put Austin within eight points. When they received the ball again, Bellisari engineered a five-play 42-yard drive, culminating in him finding Jones for his fourth touchdown of the game to give New Orleans a 42-27 lead. The VooDoo then changed things up with an onside kick which was recovered by LB Tremaine Neal. Bellisari brought the VooDoo to the five-yard line with five seconds left, but in the final play of the quarter, Austin DB Toure’ Carter picked the ball off to halt the scoring.

The VooDoo took the ball to open the third quarter and Bellisari found Henderson for a four-yard TD to give the VooDoo a 49-27 lead. When the Wranglers got the ball back, they drove the length of the field and Campbell eventually found Amey for his second score of the game, but DL Melvin Williams blocked the extra point attempt to keep the Wranglers within 16 points. The VooDoo took the ball back, but Bellisari was picked off in the end zone by Destrehan HS graduate Damon Mason. Campbell took them on a sustained drive and Amey eventually found the end zone again on a two-yard run for the last offensive play of the third quarter.

The VooDoo broke out of their offensive lull somewhat to open play in the fourth quarter when Ruffin salvaged the team’s drive with a 22-yard field goal to give the VooDoo a 52-40 lead. The Wranglers continued their offensive surge as Amey returned the kickoff 26 yards and closed out the Austin drive with a two-yard touchdown run to put the Wranglers within five points. The VooDoo would get back to scoring touchdowns though as Bellisari found Henderson for a scoring pass to put New Orleans up by 12 points with less than five minutes left. Austin made a game of it with Campbell hitting Lewis for a 32-yard touchdown to cut the lead to five points with just over a minute to play. The VooDoo pounced on the onside kick try and Bellisari pushed the lead back to 12 by running the ball in from six yards out. Amey scored his fifth touchdown of the game, leaping to haul in an eight-yard pass to cut the New Orleans lead to five points with 19 seconds left on the clock. Henderson iced the victory for the VooDoo, grabbing the onside kick to wrap up the 66-61 victory.

The VooDoo will look to make it two straight wins as they close out their 2007 campaign next Sunday when they visit the Georgia Force in a 2:00 pm kickoff.
