New Orleans VooDoo DB Calvin Spears was selected as the Arena Football League’s ADT Defensive Player of the Month for March, it was announced today by the league.

Spears (6-0, 195, Grambling), in his fourth AFL season, recorded 33 tackles, five interceptions, five passes defensed and one forced fumble in the first five games of the season. One of the leaders of a defensive unit that is ranked fourth in the AFL in scoring defense, first in interceptions (12) and forced turnovers (17) and second in turnover ratio (+9), Spears has contributed by leading the Arena Football League with five interceptions, while standing among league leaders in tackles, solo tackles and passes defensed.

Spears played an important role in all four of the VooDoo’s March victories. In New Orleans’ 54-53 win over the Orlando Predators on March 9, Spears recorded a game high 8.5 tackles and three passes defensed. The following week in the VooDoo’s 76-55 win over Tampa Bay, Spears had 5.5 tackles and one forced fumble. The Baton Rouge native exploded in the club’s 63-24 win over Cleveland on March 21, making 5.5 tackles and a team record three interceptions to capture AFL ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors. In Sunday’s 54-51 win at Colorado, Spears had a team-high eight tackles and two passes defensed. Spears also had two picks in the club’s season opener at Los Angeles, February 29.

“Calvin is having a fantastic season and continues to do whatever it takes to help our team win,” said VooDoo Coach Mike Neu. “He is one of the leaders on our team and we will continue to count on him.”

The first place VooDoo return to action this Saturday when they face the defending ArenaBowl Champion San Jose SaberCats at the New Orleans Arena. Kickoff is 6 p.m. The game can will be broadcast live on CST and can be heard on Bayou 95.7 FM.

I think they screwed up. Spears and Lin J Shell both have 4 int's on the year. The only difference is that Shell has 76 return yards and a TD vs. Spears 6 yards. Plus Shell also got a botched kickoff/fumble for a TD. I'm a big fan of Calvin but Shell got hosed! Shell leads the team in tackles with 1 more than Calvin. Hey I'm just glad these two guys are on the VooDoo they both lead the league in Int's.
