OK, before anybody gets all up tight, let me say that I remember my high school doing the exact same thing back in the 70s. We could dress up as 50s greasers or girls. The girls could dress as guys or 50s greaser chicks.

My sisters say it was pretty common annual event in high schools as far back as the 1940s and 1950s.

Girls show up dressed as boys. Boys show up dressed as girls. Ha-ha. All in fun. No big deal.

Did your school ever do this?

Now, don't get me wrong, I would question doing this with grade school kids.

Kids' Cross-Dressing Event Draws Ire
Wisconsin Grade School's Costume Tradition Enrages Christian Radio Network
April 7, 2008

(AP) An elementary-school event in which kids were encouraged to dress as members of the opposite gender drew the ire of a Christian radio group, whose angry broadcast prompted outraged calls to the district office.

Students at Pineview Elementary had been dressing in costume all last week as part of an annual school tradition called Wacky Week. On Friday, students were encouraged to dress either as senior citizens or as members of the opposite sex.

A local resident informed the Voice of Christian Youth America on Friday. The Milwaukee-based radio network responded by interrupting its morning programming for a special broadcast that aired on nine radio stations throughout Wisconsin. The broadcast criticized the dress-up day and accused the district of promoting alternative lifestyles.

My HS (late 90s) and throughout the time my bro and sis went there (late 80s-early 90s) did the same thing. Before each football game there was a different theme of dress.

Gender benders, crossdressing, and anything violating traditional gender/sex roles makes baby Jebus cry.

gotta love those christian "we know what's best for everyone" groups

I think this is a pretty silly thing to be outraged about. What harm does this do?

We did it in high school and have done it at the place I teach. It always seems to be one of the more fun goofy days around.

My school did it after spring exams. To give the teachers time to grade all the tests, they'd put us in the gym for a "fun day." People did skits and made fun of the teachers. We had a "talentless talent contest" if I recall. I did WC Fields imitations, with cheerleaders escorting me out to do my bit.

"Ahhh, yes, my little chick-a-dee...if I had a swing like that in my backyard, I'd stay home and play on it all day." :hihi:

How freaking stupid.

Our local schools never did it, but I can assure you, youd see it around Halloween.

As long as its done under the premise of silliness, having fun, etc, who cares?

What's intersting is that the local "Christian" radio group percieves the children dressing up differently in a sexual manner, whereas it clearly wasn't the intent of the school or the organizers of this activity--a completely harmless exercise which had no sexual connotations whatsoever.

Baby Jebus doesn't like anybody making fun of the way God made them.

I don't see the problem. We did it in high school during the spring for our "mock" homecoming along with the powder puff football game. The homecoming "court" would be the guys dressed up like women and the women dressed like guys.

I hope I didn't make the little baby jeebus cry.

More or less... no possible harm could come from this, unless some way overzealous mom sends Timmy to school as the incarnation of everything she either once was or wishes she could have been.

Next thing you know, playing "catch" will be banned

I am not excusing over zelous Christians by any means, but it does seem like an odd thing for an elementary school to do.
