New Orleans -- Republicans lost control of Congress this year in part because of myriad scandals. But in one of the midterm election's lingering loose ends -- tomorrow's election for a still-unresolved seat here -- the campaign centers on two Democrats arguing over which one is more corrupt.
Eight-term Rep. William J. Jefferson is defending his seat in a runoff after he failed on Nov. 7 to win the majority vote required by Louisiana law. The once-popular incumbent was damaged by a highly publicized federal investigation into alleged bribes, notably a Federal Bureau of Investigation raid last year that found $90,000 in a freezer in his Washington home.
Mr. Jefferson hasn't been charged with any crime, and he has denied wrongdoing. But that hasn't stopped his rival, Democratic state Rep. Karen Carter, from playing up the probe in her bid to unseat him.
