Some younger WhoDats weren’t born yet. Let’s set the stage in Sep ‘85:

1. The 49’ers were the defending SB champs.

2. Owid Allen (O.A.) “Bum” Phillips was the Saints head coach: Bum’s 62nd b’day.

3. WR’s Jerry Rice & Eric Martin were rookies that season.

4. The late Hokie Gajan was at RB (with Earl Campbell).

5. The 49’ers were a 20+ point favorite... unheard of for an NFL game.

6. The Saints had three (3) starters on the OL out with injuries. They patched their MASH unit with 3 replacements. 🤔

Grab your popcorn & brewski, and enjoy this one. :munch:

Watch to the end to see how the Saints come through with this “Upset Special!” Game starts @ around the 7:00 min. mark.

Wow. I had forgotten that Eric Martin returned kicks. Watching this I realized that I could still identify any player just by their jersey number.

Thanks for sharing.

Hold up. Did they just say Dave Wilson went 2 for 22 in the opening game of the year!??!?!!?

I suddenly miss Drew Brees a whoooooooole lot.

Wow. Remember my grandpa watching this, drinking his Bud.

Only watched a portion, but so far 3 turnovers and no offense for the Saints and only down 7-0. Defense definitely did their job that day.

But, but,,, they had good ol' Petey Pereaux, er, Perot!!!!

Loved watching that game again. That was a bad team that had some really good players. Players that would lead the team to their 1st winning season just a couple of years later.

Bum was very good at acquiring talent but he was a god awful on the field coach....one of the worst....we actually had a pretty good offensive line by the time his tenure ended....

Says a lot about our offensive identity that year. Our leading receiver was big ole Hoby Brenner and leading rusher was our FB Wilson (who almost had almost identical stats as Campbell that season). Anyone remember Goodlow? If not for injuries, he would have been a DOG! He had in only 12 games in '85 603 yds with an 18.8 yards per reception avg. He had big numbers in CFL with playing only 5-6 games each of his 2 years there. If not for neck injury and other nagging injuries, he would have been more than a footnote in Saints history...or NFL for that matter.
