You know what "it" is........the gut punch loss where defeat is snatched from the jaws of victory.

If you look at instances where this happened in the playoffs (2011, 2017 and 2018).......in none of those regular seasons did we have one of those losses. If the Saints lost, it was typically because the other team was simply playing better for most of the game. And they didn't have late leads in those regular season games.

So since apparently in the 2010s it's been etched in stone somewhere that we have to lose a 4th qtr lead in a huge game any time we win the division.................well, here ya go. This is as close to a playoff game that we'll be in all season prior to the actual playoffs.

Not sure what you're expecting in the playoffs.

But this should be a portending.

Set your expectations accordingly.

I remember you blindly assuming the Chargers would lose @ Baltimore in the playoffs, because of what Baltimore did to them a month or so prior.

How did that work out?

Saints did many things well. Unlike the Falcons loss there are things to be learned. N.O has 3 opportunities left to finish the season strong. This team still has every opportunity to achieve its goals and make continuous strides.

As an aside Drew this season so far has shown that no matter the circumstance he will make the game winning drive.

Silver Lining. Thanks.

It’s true. Playoffs are coming and if we can learn from it now and make the necessary changes from coaches to players in the regular season, that’s the most important thing.

The Thursday night loss to ATL in 2017 when Deion Jones intercepted Brees in the endzone was a gut punch loss with plenty of what ifs.

I do remember that game being extremely frustrating.............but it's very much an apples to oranges comparison to the types of losses we're discussing. We're talking about losses where the Saints had a lead late in the 4th qtr and then had it dwindle away. Their last lead on the Falcons in that game was with nearly 10 minutes left in the 4th.

Yeah, but it sure seemed like we were going in for the win in the final minute and then threw an INT in the endzone to a covered Josh Hill. That's pretty devastating, plus that was another game where we had like 12 penalties called on us and ATL had like 2.

To be perfectly blunt, this has ALWAYS been an issue under Payton’s tenure. Regardless of the DC; Gibbs, Williams and now Allen, it never ceases to end. The nature too, in the way they lose is really ridiculous.

Let’s take a look at the defensive plays that SOLELY, have caused us fans and this organization not to have more POTENTIAL Super Bowl appearances.

2011
Greg Williams
Jenkins and Harper mix up the coverage and miss the tackle on Vernon Davis leading to the winning score to knock the Saints out from hosting the NFCCG against the Giants. Saints would have rolled the Giants at home that year.

2017
Dennis Allen
Rookie Marcus Williams goes no arms to try and make a big hit on Diggs and whiffs. Game ending winning TD, to prevent Saints from going to NFCCG at Philly. Highly likely the Saints would have had a legit chance to win and advance to the Super Bowl.

2018
Dennis Allen
NFCCG 4th down and 21 from the Rams own 15. Goff rolls right as Jordan does not contain Goff in the pocket. They complete the pass for 23 yards and subsequently go on to win and play in the Super Bowl.

2019
Dennis Allen
Today’s game; HUGE game, almost like a playoff game really, that goes a long way in determining HF advantage. 4th and 2. Saints use a ROOKIE CB against the Niners most formidable offensive receiving threat. DUH! Pass complete, game over.

Meh, can we get to the bowl without HFA? That's where we're at now.
