Sounds gruesome, but it was probably over so quick he didn't have time to think about it.

Drowning would suck more.
 
When I did flightline security, we only stood under the aircraft wing, no berets.

In the Navy/Marine Corps when on the flight line or on the carrier, we wear helmets with ear/eye protection. A regular flight line is dangerous enough. Now on a carrier, make it extremely condensed, more confusing, and LOUD and I'm surprised more accidents like this don't occur. It is a testament to the training that goes on that there aren't more like this.
 
In 1943, my father was a Douglas Dauntless dive bomber pilot in training. His squadron was on the flight line and a fellow pilot gestured to a nurse, she saw him and turned to wave. She walked into a spinning propeller and was killed. The pilot shut the plane down, got out, and had to be discharged out of the Navy.

Terrible for all involved.
