What are the greatest secular songs ever written (2 Viewers)

WWOZ plays jazz regularly
As does WTUL (fewer slots but deeper cuts)
WWNO has a 2 & 3 station that plays jazz and orchestral
Okay, outside of New Orleans, ha...

I can tell you there was nothing in New York/New Jersey when I left there 20 years ago (there used to be an orchestral station, but the owners canned it and turned it into a hip-hop radio channel in the late 90s - a big shock to regular listeners who hadn't heard it was coming - but no jazz station at all while I lived there), and there's nothing I've found anywhere in Texas, either.

And it was when Aynsley complained about the direction the music was taking that Schon kicked him out of the band. He joined to make the kind of music that's on the first couple of albums, not the pop garbage they were starting to do (he disliked Infinity and the new stuff they were working on that would appear on the next album he really hated). Schon fired the best musician in the band because Aynsley wanted to be a musician.

Didn't know that but it doesn't surprise me.....they were all about Steve Perry's voice and Schon's mostly poppy restrained guitar licks....money and popular wise the formula worked....

All I know about Jan Hammer is that he did the theme song for Miami Vice.

He is a Czech, great keyboard chops, played for a time in Mahavishnu (if you are playing with John McLaughlin you definitely have skills)....and had his own band and a ton of side projects....
Schon was a member of HSAS for at least one decent album

Sammy Hagar
Neil Schon
Kenny Aaronson
Michael Shrieve

Yup, Journey bit it after Infinity. Aynsley Dunbar's last album with the band.

Never knew about them....

Truth. The only jazz stations now are on Sirius satellite radio. Nada on regular airwaves. No orchestral stations, either.

I had what I would call a spiritual experience in a Venice restaurant last October.....the food and atmosphere were incredible but what really made it seem "back in time" was the Dave Brubeck records they constantly played.....even the cocktail glasses and plates were straight out of the 60's......

And speaking of that, the OP asks for the "greatest secular songs" ever, then proceeds to list a bunch of forgettable pop-rock trash (for the most part).

Meanwhile, truly great songs like "Take Five," "At Last," "Birdland," "It Don't Mean a Thing," "Besame mucho," "Garota de Ipanema (the second most recorded song in history)," "Take the A Trian," "All the Things You Are," "Minnie the Moocher," "I Got Rhythm," "Unforgettable," "'Round Midnight," "What a Wonderful World" are nowhere to be seen.

Also, where is Stevie!?!?!?! If "Superstition" and "Sir Duke" aren't on your list, something just must be wrong with your ears...
